①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle(车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come? There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think? Would you enjoy riding to school or to visit a friend in a self-flying taxi? Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future?
34. What is Sebastian Thrun’s opinion about the future of flying cars?
A. He thinks it will never happen.
B. He thinks it will happen in the next century.
C. He is not sure about the future of flying cars.
D He believes it will happen in ten years and faster.
35. Why are some companies developing flying cars as air taxis?
A. To solve safety problems. B. To make them cheaper.
C. To provide rides for people. D. To compete with common cars.
36. What is the possible structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
37. What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Is a Flying Car Your Dream Car? B. Will Future Flying Cars Need Drivers?
C. The Exciting World of Electric Taxis D. The History of Air Travel Technologies

What do you do with clothes you don’t want to wear any more? You may donate them or give them to other people. What happens next? Where do these clothes end up?
It’s reported that 92 million tons of clothes end up in landfills every year. This means that every second a truck full of clothes arrives at a landfill.
Sadly, the beaches of Ghana, a country in West Africa, are one of these places. Now, the beaches are covered with clothing waste.
People from all over the world donate clothes to charity. However, charity shops only sell up 20 percent of donated clothes, said the Guardian. The unsold clothes are then put in large bags and travel to other countries to be sold again or treated as waste.
The Kantamanto market in Accra, the capital of Ghana, is one of the world’s largest secondhand clothing markets. Every week, 20 million pieces of clothes arrive at Kantamanto. But about 40 percent of them leave the market as waste.
Workers either burn the waste or put it underground. However, the city is near the sea, so there’s not enough space for landfills. This is why a lot of clothing waste ends up on the beach. As it goes into the sea, fish and other sea life are in danger. Sea turtles (海龟) can’t get to the land, and fish can’t grow because they may get caught in the clothes.
The waste is also hurting the economy (经济), Ernest Ijawan, a worker at a landfill in Ghana, told Forbes. Fishers can’t catch as many fish as before since most of the things they catch are clothes.
According to another survey, many fast fashion clothes are worn only 7 to 10 times, and then they are thrown away.
Around 15 years ago, this number was 10 to 15 times. People maybe haven’t realized that our clothes can be bad for the environment. But that’s the fact. So please think twice before we buy clothes or throw them away.
38. The writer explains his point by ________.
A. listing numbers B. telling stories C. giving examples D. both A and C
39. How did a piece of old clothes in Ghana end up on the beach?
①Nobody bought it. ②There was no place for landfills.
③The person donated it to charity. ④It was treated as waste.
⑤It was put in one charity shop.
A. ⑤③①④② B. ⑤②④③① C. ③⑤①④② D. ③⑤②④①
40. The writer thinks our clothes can be bad for the environment because ________.
A. as it goes into the sea, fish and other sea life are in danger

D. the beaches of Ghana are covered with clothing waste
41. What’s the main idea of the passage?

Many traditional woodcut prints (版画) are either black and white or simple in color, but reduction woodcuts (绝版木刻) can show rich colors.
The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. The reduction woodcuts became an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Leng Guangmian, 40, is a reduction woodcut artist. Leng started learning it in 2003. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like an adventure. “Every time we cut on the wood and then print, we never know what it will be like in the end. “ As he sees beautiful patterns layer by layer, he only gets more excited, added Leng.
But finishing such work is not easy. He said that before cutting, he needs to plan for the whole print and choose colors for different layers. A big print usually takes months to finish.
Leng wants his artwork to show both great woodcutting skills and the culture and life in Pu’er. “For my works, there are two themes: Tea Horse Road (茶马古道), because Pu’er is one of the starting places of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone.”
Leng Guangmian is now getting more people to know about the reduction woodcut. He trains farmers in Pu’er and brings the art into schools. To make students understand and learn the art quickly, he even thought of a new idea of cardboard printing. “By using a small cardboard and making it simpler with three to five colors, students can get the beauty of the art,” Leng said.

D. He believes it will happen in ten years and faster.
35. Why are some companies developing flying cars as air taxis?
A. To solve safety problems. B. To make them cheaper.
C To provide rides for people.
C

The winners of the 2023 Hugo Awards (雨果奖) were made public on Oct. 21st, 2023. Chinese writer Hai Ya took home an award for his book “The Space-Time Painter” and he became the third Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.
When creating the novel, Hai Ya drew his idea from a famous painting, A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). It was painted by Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty (宋朝). Hai Ya’s story with science fiction (科幻小说) began in his childhood. “When I was a child, the bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’,” Hai Ya told Beijing Youth Daily. He added that science fiction opened a new world for him as a kid.
