Education in 2080 is distinctive from education in the 2020s. Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child’s education looks like in 2080. Her name is Shemsy. Shemsy is 13, and she is confident and loves learning.
Shemsy does not go to school in the morning because schools as you know them no longer exist. The institution was abolished as it was widely thought of as more like a prison or a factory than a creative learning environment. Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages. They are where intergenerational learning happens, in line with the belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Every year, Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”. Shemsy is actively engaged in designing her education and has to propose projects she would like to be involved in to contribute to and serve her community. She also spends lots of time playing as the role of play in learning has finally been recognized as essential and core to our humanity. Shemsy works a lot collaboratively. Access to education is universal, and higher education institutions no longer differentiate themselves by how many people they reject yearly. Variability between students is expected and leveraged (利用) as young people teach one another and use their differences as a source of strength. Shemsy naturally explores what she is curious about at a pace she sets. She still has some classes to take that are mandatory for children globally: Being Human and the History of Humanity.
We invite you to think about your vision for education in the year 2080, what does it look like, who does it serve, and how does it transform our societies?
4.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.There are different types of education.
B.The present education needs improvements.

D.The goal of future education is fundamentally different.
5.What do we know about the Learning Hub that Shemsy goes to?
A.It accepts students of all ages. B.It promotes competition.
C.It discourages individualized learning. D.It is all about play-based learning.
6.What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Tough. B.Satisfactory. C.Optional. D.Required.
7.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.An Example to All B.A Vision for Education
C.A Challenge for Education D.A Journey into the Future
C
For decades linguists have argued over how children learn language. Some think that babies are born as “blank boards” who pick up language simply from experience — hearing, seeing and playing with the world. Others argue that experience is not enough and that babies’ brains must be hardwired to make acquiring language easy.
AI models such as GPT-4 have done little to settle the debate. The way these models learn language — by collecting lots of text data from millions of web pages—is greatly different to the experiences of babies.
A team of scientists at New York University examined the question by training an AI model on the experiences of a single baby. Between the ages of six and 25 months, a young child called Sam had a head-wearing camera for an hour a week-around one of his waking hours. The camera recorded everything he saw and heard while he played with toys, enjoyed days at the park and interacted with his pet cats. The recordings and audio were fed into an Al, which was set up to know that images and words that appeared at the same time were related, but was otherwise left to make sense of the mess of colors and speech that Sam experienced.
Despite the limited training data, the AI was able to pick out objects and learn the matching words. The researchers tested the model by asking it to identify objects that Sam had seen before, such as a chair from his home or one of his toy balls. Given a list of four options the model picked the correct word 62 of the time, far above the chance level of 25%. To the researchers’ surprise, the model could also identify chairs and balls that Sam had never seen. The AI learned at least 40 different words, but it was far from matching Sam’s vocabulary and language abilities by the end of the experiment.
The researchers recently argue in the journal Science that, to match words to objects, learning from experience may well be enough. Doubters, however, doubt that the AI would be able to learn abstract nouns or verbs, and question how similar the learning processes really are. The mystery of language acquisition lives on.
8.What does the underlined word “hardwired” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Organic. B.Average. C.Born. D.Reliable.
9.What are the findings of the research on AI models?
A.AI models can understand babies’ speech.
B.AI models can enrich their vocabulary by themselves.
C.AI models can remember more objects but can’t pick them out.
D.AI models can learn more words but can’t match babies’ abilities.
10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Leaning from experience is far from enough.
B.Language abilities of babies are born in nature.
C.How the AI is developed proves easy for scientists.
D.How the AI picks up the language remains unknown.
11.What is the author’s attitude towards the baby AI?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Subjective.

Animal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.
Detroit’s population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Anti-pollution laws and government-supported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants.
Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit’s parklands are so quiet that people don’t even know they’re in the city.
“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said JohnHartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that’s not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to embrace the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you’re going to have to have people on board.”
12.What does the author want to tell us by the example of Detroit?
A.It’s government-supported efforts that really matter.
B.Humans’ efforts can make a difference in rewilding.
C.Humans are to blame for the worsening environment.
D.It’s hard for humans and wildlife to live in harmony.
13.What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century?
A.The city was overpopulated. B.More community gardens disappeared.
C.Many buildings were abandoned. D.The environment was badly damaged.
14.What can we infer about current Detroit from the text?
A.It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species.
B.Tourists don’t show any interest in its quiet surroundings.
C.It’s become a center for those who study animals and plants.
D.It’s turned into a place where people can get close to nature.
15.What does the underlined word “embrace” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Accept. B.Delay. C.Imagine. D.Supervise.
Autonomy-supportive parenting is an approach that focuses on building a child’s sense of agency in the world as well as a strong sense of self. 16 We should recognize that children have a different perspective or experience than adults. Therefore, instead of pushing adults’ way of thinking on children, adults should let kids do their own critical thinking and solve problems themselves, which will help them trust their abilities.
Guide kids to find their own solution
As any parent with more than one child can tell you, kids develop differently. 17 While one child may find it easy to start their homework independently, the other might not be a self-starter. So we push our kids to the next level by knowing their skill level and meeting them there.
Let kids find their own fun
18 It really is harm to them. It also sets us up to be their cruise (航行) directors at all times. That’s a huge burden on us! Letting children find their own thing to do when boredom strikes allows them to become self-sufficient and use their imagination to find fun on their own.
Being sympathetic doesn’t mean giving in
Another characteristic of autonomy-supportive parenting is being open, curious, and flexible. Trusting children to be accountable to themselves (or acting like it) is the only way you will know if your child will be a responsible, independent adult. For example, if you ask your child when they think is the best time to do their homework, and they tell you it’s in the morning before school begins, support them and let them try it, no matter how strange it sounds. 19
Don’t forget to support yourself
Once you grasp autonomy-supportive parenting, you’ll see opportunities to put it into practice. No matter how old your kid is, adopting this style will not be easy. 20 If you get hard on yourself because you’re not measuring up, you’re more likely to return to the controlling practices.
A.It may work.
B.Our kids don’t know how to manage boredom.
C.That can mean we have to support them in different ways.
D.So forgive yourself if things don’t go right on a particular day.
E.And they may not know yet, but it’s good for them to think about it.
F.Some days are just going to be more autonomy-supportive than others.
G.It’s trying to understand children’s experience of what’s going on right now.

We were driving across the big state of Texas on our way to California. Suddenly, our car coughed and then stopped.
“Are we out of gas?” Mom asked. Dad nodded. Cotton fields lined both sides of the lonely highway as far as the eye could see. We hadn’t seen a car for a very long time, and we had passed the last town an hour before. “Don’t worry,” Dad said. “Someone will be along soon.” But he didn’t sound very sure about that. He got out and put the car’s hood (引擎盖) up, saying, “This will let them know we’re in trouble.”
After an hour, we saw dust in the distance. A car was fast approaching going in the same direction as ours. Pleased, Dad jumped to his feet, waving his arms wildly. He smiled as the car got closer, yet the car just sounded its horn (喇叭) and rushed off. We were so upset and I felt scared. Dusk was approaching and we had been sitting for a couple of hours. Then we heard a small noise in the distance.
It sounded like men singing at the top of their lungs. It got louder, and soon we saw a worn-out old truck driving slowly down the highway toward us. The whole truck seemed to float along surrounded by songs sung in Spanish.
“Get in the car immediately,” Mom instructed me nervously. “Al, you’d better get in here, too. We can’t be too careful out here in the middle of nowhere.” Dad just stood by the car door, full of tension.
The wooden-sided truck came to a stop right beside him. Mom and I held our breath. Would they hold us up? What would happen to us? We could be at their mercy. From their look, we knew they were farmers who often labored in the fields all day under the hot Texas sun.
“Habla Español?” the driver stopped and called out his window at Dad. “What? I know little Spanish,” Dad shouted back, shaking his head. He wondered how to convey the message that we needed a ride to a gas station.

Some think that babies are born as “blank boards” who pick up language simply from experience — hearing, seeing and playing with the world. Others argue that experience is not enough and that babies’ brains must be hardwired to make acquiring language easy.(几十年来,语言学家一直在争论儿童是如何学习语言的。
根据倒数第二段的“To the researchers’ surprise, the model could also identify chairs and balls that Sam had never seen. The AI learned at least 40 different words, but it was far from matching Sam’s vocabulary and language abilities by the end of the experiment.(令研究人员惊讶的是,这个模型还能识别出山姆从未见过的椅子和球。人工智能学会了至少40个不同的单词,但在实验结束时,它的词汇量和语言能力还远远达不到山姆的水平。) ”可知,人工智能模型可以学习更多的单词,但无法与婴儿的能力相提并论。故选D。
10.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“The researchers recently argue in the journal Science that, to match words to objects, learning from experience may well be enough. Doubters, however, doubt that the AI would be able to learn abstract nouns or verbs, and question how similar the learning processes really are. The mystery of language acquisition lives on.(研究人员最近在《科学》杂志上提出,要将单词与物体匹配起来,从经验中学习可能就足够了。然而,怀疑者怀疑人工智能是否能够学习抽象的名词或动词,并质疑学习过程到底有多相似。语言习得的奥秘一直存在。)”可知,人工智能学习语言的过程仍然还有未知的东西需要去探索。故选D。
11.推理判断题。根据最后一段的“The researchers recently argue in the journal Science that, to match words to objects, learning from experience may well be enough. 47.One possible version:
Then Dad gestured and used some easy English words. The farmers seemed to understand and Dad took a container out of our car. The next thing I knew was that Mom and I were sitting inside the truck next to the driver, and Dad was in the back with another two men. They sang us songs all the way to the nearest town and pulled into a gas station. We got off. Dad thanked them and offered to give them some money, but they all laughed and refused without hesitation. Dad then followed a worker to fill the container.
The container soon got full, but how could we return to where our car stopped? It was at that moment that Dad heard the truck driver say something to him. Dad showed a puzzled look. Soon, the worker who knew Spanish laughed, “It’s dark. They want to make sure you get back to your car safely, so they offer to drive you back.” When we arrived, we expressed our gratitude for their kindness and waved goodbye to them. Then, they drove away into the night, singing merrily. This was really a memorable trip for my family, from which we learned a valuable lesson — there are good souls everywhere, even if they come disguised in a worn-out truck.
