Space is a 38 place for human beings. Firstly, there is no air to breathe. Secondly, space also has high levels of radiation(辐射) that can pass through our bodies and make us 39 . Thirdly, some parts of space are really cold 40 other parts are very hot. So astronauts could die in a few seconds if they 41 outside their spaceship without their suits. With a spacesuit, though, astronauts can move around in space for several hours.

Spacesuits keep astronauts 42 sealed(密封的) inside. A backpack sends O2 in to let astronauts breathe normally. At the same time, the C 43 astronauts breathe out is sucked away. The suit also protects them from harmful radiation and fast-moving space dust. 44 the spacesuit is another suit that looks like a pair of tight pyjamas(睡衣裤) with little pipes running through it. Water runs through these pipes to 45 astronauts because wearing a spacesuit can make astronauts very hot!

In the universe, there is the sun, the moon, the earth and many stars. Through our geography lessons, we know the earth goes around the sun and that the moon goes around the earth. We have day and night because the earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is day. When our part of the earth turns away from the sun, it is night.

Just because the moon is closer to the earth than the sun, it looks much bigger than the sun. Big things will look smaller when they are farther, and small things also look bigger when they are nearer.
The sun is big enough to give out very strong light. The moon can’t give out any light at all, but it looks quite bright too. Why? In fact, the light from the moon comes from the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter than the stars. But actually(事实上) the stars are much bigger and brighter than the moon. They look smaller than the moon also because they are farther away from the earth.

But at 9:00 am on October 15th, 2003, the Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei was sent up to space. He stayed there for about 21 hours. It was the first time that the Chinese had got into space.

Wukong, Tiangong, Tianwen ... Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?
Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer Satellite(暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after the Chinese superhero Monkey King. According to Journey to the West, Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes which can tell the difference between good and evil. The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as Monkey King to help scientists search for dark matter in space.

The name of the space station, Tiangong, means “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths, this is the home of Tian Di. Now the Tiangong space station is a home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong so that they can work together.
Tianwen, China’s Mars missions(任务), gets its name from a poem by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a well-known poet from ancient China. In the poem, he had questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the real world, showing his hunger for the truth. Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.

Is there intelligent(有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “No.” or “We don’t know.”. But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or the earth—in other systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited the earth?“Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as sending radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

The journey to the moon has been the first step towards exploration(探险) in space. The distance between the moon and the earth is very short indeed(的确) when compared with the distances between the earth and the other planets. Venus, the nearest planet to the earth, is millions of miles away!

Travelling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more challenging(有挑战性的) than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous. In 1976 two American probes landed on Mars, trying to discover whether that planet has any life. So far scientists are not sure about that.
Scientists have discovered the surface of Venus is very hot and that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense(密实的) and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the earth’s atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets just like our home, the earth, but man should realise the earth will be the only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.

If we mix oil and water in a bottle on the earth, they will quickly separate because they are 82. different things. Gravity brings the water down while the oil stays on 83. top . However, if you do this in the space station, with little gravity, the oil and water will get 84. together . How can we separate them, then? In class, Ye Guangfu rotated(旋转) the 85. bottle to create centrifugal force(离心力). With this man-made gravity, the heavier water was pushed to the farthest point, which brought the lighter oil closer to the centre.

The hero in my heart
Of many space heroes in our country’s history, Deng Qingming leaves a deep impression on me. He is the hero in my heart.
Deng Qingming was born in Jiangxi in 1966. His family was poor, but he studied hard at school. In 1998, Deng became one of the first group of 14 astronauts for the space programme in our country. Although he served as a backup astronaut for many years, he took every training session seriously and never missed any one of them.
