She spent nine years supporting homeless people in Springfield, Missouri, through a charitable organization called The Gathering Tree, which welcomed people a few times each week during daylight hours, providing a safe and welcoming place for them to take showers, socialize, or simply rest. But they had to close their doors for the night. “One cold winter night, I watched as my friends walked off into the darkness to a wet, cold camp, while we went home to a warm bed,” Linda said, “I realized I had to do something.” She had an idea to create a village of tiny houses to make sure no one slept outside on her watch! Linda started fundraising. She began by appealing to her fellow estate agents in the area before branching out into local businesses. Using these donations, Linda purchased a nearby abandoned area that already had the infrastructure in place. By February 2019, they’d built 31 tiny homes for their Eden Village and found residents for each one. All the residents must be good neighbors in order to stay in the village, and they certainly are! Linda was happy when she learned that the village actually increased local property values rather than lowering them as some people had feared. Linda hasn’t stopped working since Eden Village began. A second village opened in the fall of 2020, and there’s a third location in the works as well! She hopes to have five villages across Springfield within the next five years, helping more than 200 homeless people get off the streets and into a new life. To this day, Linda firmly believes that there are a million reasons someone can become homeless, but each of them can be solved with love and community involvement. 4. What does The Gathering Tree do for the homeless? A. It raises money for them. B. It builds tiny houses for them. C. It helps them find warm camps. D. It provides them with day shelters. 5. What did some people fear? A. Their own homes would be lost . B. Their jobs would be taken over . C. Their safety would be seriously threatened. D. Their local property values would be lowered. 6. What does Linda expect to do? A. Help homeless people find work. B. Reach out to more homeless people. C. Build more infrastructure at Eden Village. D. Get homeless people involved in building Eden Village. 7. Which of the following can best describe Linda? A. Ambitious and scholarly. B. Brave and imaginative. C. Sympathetic and innovative. D. Generous and independent. 4. D 5. D 6. B 7. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin. The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices (设备) set up along the river collect and transmit information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions. One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said. “In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.” And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪), ”said Shen. Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river. 8. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River? A. To conduct historical research. B. To create a virtual tourist attraction. C. To raise public awareness of river protection. D. To improve flood control and prevention efforts. 9. How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance? A. They record water quality. B. They improve the river’s beauty. C. They monitor and report dike movements. D. They serve as markers for important locations. 10. What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River? A. Entertaining tourists. B. Collecting information on dike conditions. C. Patrolling and take wildlife photos. D. Testing water quality. 11. What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Complete. B. Basic. C. Beautiful. D. Natural. D 9. C 10. B 11. 由文章第一段中“And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin. (洪水的控制和预防一直是生活在这条河上的人们幸福生活的关键。现在,科学家们可以通过给河流一个数字孪生体来更好地解决这些问题。)”可知,创建黄河数字孪生体的主要目的是加强防洪工作。故选D。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段中“They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. (它们被埋在重要的堤坝上,以记录和报告堤坝石块的运动。)”可知,智能石头监测和报告堤防的运动。故选C。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。由文章倒数第二段中“On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. (在工程师设计的路线上,无人机成为河流的专业巡逻员,监视河堤和防洪工程。)”可知,无人机在黄河数字化治理中的作用之一是收集堤防状况信息。故选B。 【11题详解】 词句猜测题。由文章最后一段中“Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction (水下和空中,情报系统正在帮助保护黄河流域的各个方面。根据水利部的说法,在未来,我们可以期待看到这条重要河流的建设)”可知,水下和空中,情报系统正在帮助保护黄河流域的各个方面,希望在未来,可以看到这条重要河流的更全面的数字系统的建设。由此猜测,划线词意为“全面的”。A. 故选A。 D Roosters (公鸡) act differently when faced with another chicken rather than just their own reflection. This may mean that the birds can recognize themselves in a mirror, a key indicator of self-awareness. In the traditional mirror self-recognition test, which originated in1970, researchers place a mark on an animal’s body in a spot that it only see when seeing its reflection. They note if the animal touches the mark while examining its mirror image, which suggests it understands that what it sees represents its own body. Few non-human species have passed this test, but they include some great apes, dolphins, elephants. However, results from the test are often variable.Sonja Hillemacher and her colleagues from the University of Bonn in Germany wondered if this was because there is little natural reason for many animals to find out such marks. So, they have tried to adapt the test to the natural behaviour of roosters. Roosters usually make loud noises to warn other chickens when they see predators (捕食者) but generally stay quiet when they are alone. In the lab, they tested 68 roosters one by one in an arena divided by a wire net. They placed a bird on one side, and either left the other side empty or put another rooster in it. Then they added a mirror to the divider for some tests. The results showed that when a rooster was paired with another rooster, it raised the alarm more often than when it was alone, regardless of whether it could see its own reflection. When another rooster was present but hidden behind a mirror, few alarms were raised, showing that roosters can distinguish between reflection and reality through vision rather than smell or sound. Since the birds acted similarly when alone and with a reflection, they may realize their reflection is of themselves, say the researchers. While the research suggests that roosters may recognize themselves in mirrors, it is too early to claim that chickens possess this ability. 12. What can we learn about the traditional mirror self-recognition test? A. The test was improved in 1970. B. Elephants failed to pass the test. C. Most non-human species have passed the test. D. Animals touching the mark show self-awareness. 13. What made Sonja target the roosters in her test? A. Their sharp vision. B. Their poor smell. C. Their loud sound. D. Their native behavior. 14. What did Sonja’s test suggest about roosters? A. They sent fewer alarm before another rooster. B. They showed more interest in their reflection. C. They used vision to tell reality from reflection. D. They were unable to recognize their reflection. 15. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Roosters: Quiet Reflection-observers B. Roosters: Possible Self-recognizers C. Roosters: Clever Mark-checkers D. Roosters: Brave Alarm-raisers 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. 根据文章第一段第三句“They note if the animal touches the mark while examining its mirror image, which suggests it understands that what it sees represents its own body.(他们注意到,动物在检查自己的镜像时是否触摸标记,这表明它明白它看到的代表了它自己的身体)”可知,动物触摸标记表明它们具有自我意识。 根据第二段“However, results from the test are often variable. Sonja Hillemacher and her colleagues from the University of Bonn in Germany wondered if this was because there is little natural reason for many animals to find out such marks. So, they have tried to adapt the test to the natural behaviour of roosters.(然而,测试结果往往是可变的。德国波恩大学的 Sonja Hillemacher 和她的同事们想知道,这是否是因为许多动物很少有自然的理由去发现这样的标记。因此,他们试图使测试适用于公鸡的自然行为。)”可知,Sonja 选择公鸡作为实验对象是因为它们的自然行为。故选D项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段最后一句“When another rooster was present but hidden behind a mirror, few alarms were raised, showing that roosters can distinguish between reflection and reality through vision rather than smell or sound.(当另一只公鸡出现但隐藏在镜子后面时,很少发出警报,这表明公鸡可以通过视觉而不是气味或声音来区分反射和现实。)” 根据最后一段“Since the birds acted similarly when alone and with a reflection, they may realize their reflection is of themselves, say the researchers. While the research suggests that roosters may recognize themselves in mirrors, it is too early to claim that chickens possess this ability.(研究人员说,由于这些鸟在独处和有倒影时的行为相似,它们可能意识到自己的倒影就是自己。虽然研究表明公鸡可能在镜子中认出自己,但现在就断言鸡具有这种能力还为时过早。)”可知,文章主要讲述了公鸡可能认出镜子中的自己。所以“Roosters: Possible Self-recognizers(公鸡:可能的自我识别者)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选B项。 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 How to Improve Your EQ Emotional quotient (EQ) consists of self- awareness, self-control, self-motivation, empathy, and social skills. B Linda Brown, a real estate agent, believes that when it comes to solving homelessness, it takes a village. C Sympathetic and innovative. D. Generous and independent. C The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. D Roosters (公鸡) act differently when faced with another chicken rather than just their own reflection. A Roosters: Quiet Reflection-observers B. Roosters: Possible Self-recognizers C. Roosters: Clever Mark-checkers D.
