(22-23八年级下·浙江宁波·期末)70-year-old Tan Xiangying is a grandma of two kids in Xituo Town, Chongqing. Every week, she goes to the primary school there to join a reading salon(沙龙).
The reading salon is about family education. At first, Tan thought education was a teacher’s job, and that parents or grandparents just needed to meet children’s basic needs(基本需求). However, after taking a few classes in the salon, Tan learned that her ideas about education were not right. Now she knows a small move of family members has a big impact(影响) on kids. She asked over 10 people of her age to join the salon. Also, she’s happy that she has a wonderful school life. She never thought about that before.
Cui Xiaolan is the first teacher to give classes in the reading salon. In 2015, Cui found that many children’s parents worked away from home and that these children lived with their grandparents. Most of the grandparents knew little about how to work well with the children. That was not good. So she came up with the idea of the reading salon.
In seven years, the number of people in the reading salon has grown from 10 to more than 500. Many other schools also have their reading salons for parents and grandparents. Cui is happy about that. She said, “It’s important that the school and the family work together. I hope every child can grow in a healthy environment.”

4.From the last paragraph, we know the reading salon is ________.
A.free B.serious C.successful D.relaxing
(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Robots may seem smart, but they cannot even pick up a chess piece. “Robots are klutzes (笨手笨脚的人),” said US AI engineer Ken Goldberg.
Robot scientists say that one-year-old human babies have better movement skills than robots do. Let’s take a look at some tasks that are easy for kids but not for robots.
Pick things up.
Picking things up is not easy. If we drop our pencil on the floor, our brains work hard. First, we must find the pencil and look at its distance (距离). Then we move our hands to it. A robot cannot always move its “hand” to the right place. Calculating the distance is not easy. Then, when we touch the pencil, it might roll (滚动) a little bit. Robots cannot easily understand this either. So, if you drop a pencil on the floor, a robot will probably roll it around the room.
Get around in our world.
If someone drops you in a building you’ve never been to, you might feel a bit lost. But you can look around, find a door and get out quickly. You will not get stuck (困住的) in a corner. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on ceilings (天花板) and floors. This is because it’s hard for them to understand spaces, especially large, blank things such as walls or ceilings. Scientists need to train them with lots of data to learn this.
Understand the world made by people.
“Common sense” is what we don’t need to think or talk about. Because of common sense, we do not look for doors on the ceiling. We pick up a coffee cup by its handle (把手). We feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot. A robot? It may turn the cup upside down. It may hold the hot part of the cup, hurting itself. Scientists have tried teaching robots common-sense rules. But even huge databases don’t help much. There are just too many rules and too many exceptions. Maybe they just need more time to learn.
5.What might happen when a robot tries to pick up a pencil?
A.It might not find the pencil.
B.Its brain might stop working.
C.It might stop to watch the pencil roll.
D.It might roll the pencil around the room.
6.To find a door, what will a robot do?
A.Stay in a corner.
B.Drop itself in a building.
C.Look everywhere, even on the ceilings.
D.First think about what the door might lead to.
7.Why might a robot hold the hot part of a cup?
A.Because it doesn’t have common sense.
B.Because it doesn’t want to break it.
C.Because it cannot find the handle.
D.Because it is strong enough.
8.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Robots are not helpful at all.
B.Robots don’t follow human orders.
C.Robots have trouble understanding our world.
D.Robots are good at training themselves.
(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)What is a “cat coffee shop”? Well, it is a cafe that has cats. People can touch the cats, play with the cats and drink coffee there.
It seems that there are more pet cats around us today. And that’s true. There are 58,100,000 pet cats in China according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The number of cat owners in China is the second largest in the world after the United States. One important reason is that more young people are taking cats as pets. Maybe that’s because cats are clean pets and you don’t have to walk them. More cats bring more jobs. Many people now work at pet shops and hospitals.
But cats can be problems, too. Some people throw their pet cats away. The cats become homeless. They can pass on diseases. They also hunt and kill other animals like birds and frogs. So in Japan and Australia, the governments take homeless cats to animal hospitals. Doctors operate on them. So the cats can’t have babies. In this way, the number of cats will not go up.
9.How many things can people do in a cat coffee shop according to Paragraph 1?
A.Four. B.Three. C.Two. D.One.
10.Which country has the largest number of cat owners?
A.Japan. B.China. C.America. D.Australia.
11.Why are there more pet cats in China today according to this passage?
A.Because more cafes have cats.
B.Because cats are lovely and friendly.
C.Because more people work at pet shops.
D.Because cats are clean and easy to keep.
12.What might be the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.To keep pet cats or not.
B.Popular cat coffee shops.
C.Why not take cats as pets.
D.More cats, more problems.
(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Jenny is excited to go to school these days. The 13-year-old girl is from South Gate Middle School in Los Angeles, US. She is taking care of three green abalones (鲍鱼) at school.
The students of Violeta Llamas science class, including Jenny, have cared for the sea animals since January. The science class has eight teams. Each team takes turns to care for the abalones. Team Five—Jenny, Alexis, Jennifer and Ricardo—have now got their turn.
The abalones are kept in a box of seawater. Every day, Alexis checks if the water has too much salt. Too much salt is bad for the health of the abalones. Jenny makes fresh seawater. Then the four students work together to clean up the waste in the box and give some food to the abalones.
“Sea life is like a baby. You have to clean them and care for them.” Jennifer said.
Nancy Cruse, a scientist, leads the project. She said the number of green abalones is going down because people have caught too many of them. She said protecting the sea lives now depends on the young students.
“The students love taking care of the abalones,” said Llamas.
“Taking care of the abalones could open the door for those who want to be a sea life scientist or an environment protector,” she said.
The students’ time with the abalones will end this school year. Cruse and a team of volunteers will record the abalones and then let them return to the sea.

Hey, everyone. I’m Wang Xue. Our topic (话题) today is ________. What do you think about it? If you have any opinions, welcome to share them.
I think it is really noisy to set off firecrackers (爆竹). Some people set them off at midnight. People nearby cannot sleep well. It also creates air pollution and lots of rubbish. So I think there is no need to set them off.
Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. People set them off to wish a happy new year. We cannot give it up.
I like traveling. But the virus has made this more dangerous. I have to stay at home during the winter holiday. It is so boring.
I think we can improve firecrackers. We cannot set them off freely because now they are dangerous. But if we can make them better for the air, we wouldn’t have to give them up.
I think we can use something else to replace them. For example, we can use LED fireworks. Even kids can play with them.

②Sperm whales have the biggest brains(大睡)of all the animals on earth. Our brains weigh about 1.4 kilograms, but a sperm whale’s brain can weigh up to 9 kilograms.
③Sperm whales are amazing divers(潜水者). These huge animals can dive to around 2,000 meters and can go over 60 minutes between breaths.
④Sperm whales are the loudest animals alive. They make special high sounds to send information to one another from hundreds of kilometers away. The sounds are even louder than those made by planes. What’s more, each whale makes its own sound. Scientists believe this is how they recognize(认出)one another.
⑤Sperm whales sleep up straight near the surface(表面) of the water. It looks like they’re standing in the ocean. And scientists have found that they sleep for less than two hours every day.
⑥Ambergris(龙涎香)is a thing that forms in the stomach of a sperm whale. It is thought to protect the whale’s stomach. Sperm whales release(释放)ambergris into the sea as a sweet-smelling, egg-shaped ball. Ambergris is often used in fine perfumes(香水). A kilogram of it can sell for up to $50,000. ___▲___

(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Have you ever found that lots of kids love watching TV or playing video games? Is this good for them?
Too much time in front of screens (屏幕) has made a difference to young children. They may develop important skills more slowly.
Researchers from the University of Calgary and the University of Waterloo in Canada studied about 2400 children. Their mothers reported how much time they spent looking at screens at ages 2, 3 and 5. The study showed children aged 2 had about 17 hours of screen time every week, 3-year-olds had 25 hours, and 5-year-olds had 11 hours.
According to the study, the reason for the decrease (降低) in screen time for 5-year-olds might be that children start school at around this age.
The mothers were also asked to answer questions about their children’s development, such as how well they could do different tasks, or how well they could understand and answer questions. The study found that children who spent more time in front of screens when they were 2 years old were less probably to do well on developmental tests when they were 3 years old. And more screen time when children were 3 years old caused worse results when they were 5.
Dr Sheri Madigan explained that between the ages of 2 and 5, children’s brains develop very quickly, and that what happens during this time can have long effects (影响).
Children may move less while they are watching screens, and may not talk with whoever is looking after them as much. They are not practicing and developing those important skills.

38.What did the researchers do in the study?
A.They studied 2400 teenagers in different countries.
B.They asked the mothers about children’s development.
C.They explained why kids spent much time before screens.

(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Mary and Michael have faced some problems recently and asked Anna for help. Let’s take a look at some advice from Anna.
Dear Anna,
I’m really worried about my daughter. I think some of the older boys in her school are bullying her. Every day she comes home from school in tears(眼泪). And every morning she says she doesn’t feel well because she doesn’t want to go to school. Can you give me some advice?
Mary
Hi Mary,
I think you should go and talk to your daughter’s head teacher. Bullying is a serious problem in many schools, and every school must have a rule to stop it. Perhaps you could also have a talk with your daughter, and advise ways she could keep away from these boys in her break time.
Anna
Dear Anna,
My neighbors keep playing loud music late at night. I’ve been there a couple of times to complain(抱怨), and they turn it down for a few minutes. But ten minutes later, they turn it up again. It’s making me very stressed, and my children can’t sleep. What do you think I should do?
Michael
Hi Michael,
I think you should speak to them one more time. Perhaps you could go during the day, when it’s quiet and you feel calm(冷静). Try to be polite and explain how their music is making you feel and has a bad influence(影响) on your children. Tell them that you would really like to be friendly with them, but if they keep making noise at night, you will call the police. (21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Have you ever thought about how babies learn to speak? For the first months of their lives, they cry and make noises, but children usually start forming(构成) words when they are about 12 months old. Which are the first words they say? Sometimes, they are the words they hear most often, sometimes the words for things they like. They usually start with words like mama, papa or dada. Some scientists say that sounds like ma, da, pa and ba are the easiest sounds to make, so when parents are very happy because their child is saying mama, in fact the baby is just experimenting(进行实验) with making noises!
All children begin learning their language first by listening and then speaking. They start with words for objects, like “car” or “dog”, then words for actions, like “drink” or “eat”, slowly adding other kinds of words to make sentences. They can understand more difficult words and sentences, but they can’t say them. Some children speak more than others (just like adults!) and some children speak earlier than others, but by practising, they all learn in the end.
One mother tells the story of her son who didn’t speak until he was four years old. Before then, he pointed when he wanted something or just made strange noises. One day, he came into the kitchen for breakfast and said, “Can I have some chocolate, please?” And then, he never stopped talking.
So when you start to learn another language, remember that it took years for you to learn yours! If you keep listening and trying hard to speak, you improve, just like in your own language.
51.How old are most children when they start to say the first words?
A.About 6 months old. B.About one year old. C.About 18 months old. D.About two years old.
52.When children begin language learning, which happens first?
A.Speaking. B.Reading. C.Listening. D.Writing.
53.How does the writer explain that learning takes time in Paragraph 3?
A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions. C.By giving an example. D.By making a survey.
54.What does the underlined word yours refer to?
A.Your parents. B.Your language. C.Your children. D.Your lives.
(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Below is a page from Katie’s diary.
Dear Diary,
June7, 2021
I was very sad to hear what happened to Woollie yesterday. Woollie was my favorite sheep. I have a storybook about Woollie. It says when Woollie was four, he ran away from Mr. Armstrong’s farm, and it took Mr. Armstrong six years to find Woollie. But Woollie had grown so much fleece (羊毛) that he didn’t even look like a sheep. Mr. Armstrong decided to cut his fleece on TV so everyone could see. Daddy said this happened on the day I was born. “What’s the name of the man living next door? I can’t remember it right now.” Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this? Usually, we think old people’s memories (记忆力) become bad because their brains (大脑) can’t work quickly. But a team of German scientists has a different idea.
“The human brain works slower in old age,” said scientist Michael Ramscar, “but only because they have kept much more information over time.”
The findings are a result (结果) of many computer simulations (模拟) of learning and memory. Scientists let the computers read words and learn new things each day. When the computer “reads” only so much, its result in memory tests is the same as that of a young man. But if the computer learns much more than that, its result is the same as that of an older man. It is slower because more information makes the computer’s database (数据库) grow and the computer has more data to work with —it takes time. This is the same as old people.
Think about this. A man knows two persons’ birthdays. Another man knows the birthdays of 2,000 people, but can only match the right man to the right birthday nine times out of ten. Can you say that the first man has a better memory than the second one? The fact is that “The larger the library you have in your head, the longer it usually takes to find a word,” Benedict Carey, a science reporter for the New York Times, wrote in a report about the study.
62.The writer uses the question at the beginning to _________.
A.make readers think of their friends
B.say that many people have bad memories
C.make readers interested in the passage
D.show why older people like asking questions
63.The scientists did the study by _________.
A.asking old people questions
B.reading books and some useful reports
C.following the lives of a group of old people
D.using computers to simulate man’s learning and memory
64.Why do old people forget other people’s names easily?
A.Because they have a very poor memory.
B.Because they are too old to remember things.
C.Because there is something wrong with their brains.
D.Because there is too much information in their brains.
65.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is it better to be old or young?
B.How can man use their brains?
C.Do old people have poor memories?
D.What are scientists’ new findings on brains?

①We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving our parents and facing the future. Parents may not be able to solve every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to deal with the problems that come our way.

(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Robin Hood is one of the most popular and interesting characters in English folk (民间的) stories, and his story is quite well known across the world. In fact, stories about the adventures of Robin Hood have been around for over six hundred years. There have been several films made about him, including three in Hollywood. But who was he, and was he actually real?
In the thirteenth century, King Richard and his army were fighting in foreign lands. Richard’s brother John ruled England while he was away. John was a cruel (残忍的) ruler, and so was his friend — the terrible police officer of Nottingham. The police officer asked for money from all the people who lived in the area of Nottingham. The poor had to pay a lot and struggled (挣扎) to live.
In the story, Robin Hood was angry at the unfairness and decided to fight against it. He and his fellows lived in Sherwood Forest, a large wood near Nottingham. They caught the king’s deer for food. They also robbed (抢) rich people who were travelling through the forest and gave the money to poor people. The forest was considered a dangerous place, but to Robin and his band, it was a place of safety, away from the police officer’s men.
There are some findings that a man called Robin Hood actually lived during the thirteenth century. The fact is that he was not quite such a good man as the one in the folk stories. But it is the heroic character in the story that we remember.
Today, Sherwood Forest is a tourist attraction. Nearly a million people every year come to learn about Britain’s most famous Robin Hood. And even if he wasn’t quite such a great man, it’s a great story!
77.According to Paragraph 2, how was England in the story?

B.Sherwood Forest was dangerous for Robin Hood and his band.
C.Robin Hood we remember is the real man living in the 13th century.
D.Tourists come to Sherwood Forest to learn about Robin Hood.
80.What’s the best title for the text?
A.The Story of Robin Hood B.Sherwood Forest, a Tourist Attraction
C.The Most Popular Film D.Life in England in the 13th Century
(21-22八年级下·浙江杭州·期末)Hiking(徒步)can be a great way to relax, get away and enjoy the natural beauty around us. Going on a hike sounds like a walk in the park, but there are some risks when you head out into the wildness. We spoke with Sgt. John Adams from the Search and Rescue unit(搜救部)to learn what you can do to keep safe.
Tell someone where you’re going
Especially if you’re hiking alone, it is important to make sure someone knows exactly where you’re going and when you expect to be back. And the information you left with a friend or family member will make it easier for Search and Rescue to find you.
Do some research and check conditions before you go
The weather can be very different even an hour from where you live, and trail(路径)conditions can change daily.
▲
Adams suggests you should think about bringing along a personal locator beacon(定位信标)and a whistle(哨). He said there are several successful Search and Rescue cases in which hikers were found alive and rescued when using locators.
Don’t be afraid to turn back
If you are uncomfortable, uncertain or worried about your safety at any time, be honest with yourself. Don’t be afraid to call it a day and turn back.
If worse comes to worst
Stay calm(冷静), get to a safe place and stay there. If you’re lost, walking around is likely to take farther away from the known trail and make you harder to find. If you’re injured, trying to move around may lead to a worse situation. If you brought a whistle, use it to let Search and Rescue hear you.
81.Why is it better for the hiker to tell someone where he’s going?
A.To let friends go along with you. B.To make sure he can go back on time.
C.To make it easier to be found. D.To enjoy hiking more along the way.

83.What should you do if you get lost?
A.Enjoy the natural beauty around. B.Stay somewhere safe and keep calm.
C.Move around to find the way out. D.Leave a message for your friend.
84.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To call on more people to take part in hiking. B.To explain how dangerous hiking alone is.
C.To give some advice on hiking in the wildness. D.To show what usually happens while hiking.

Amy Johnson
Amy Johnson’s first flying lesson didn’t go well. But she went on and got her license a year later. On May 5, 1930, Johnson set out in her airplane, hoping to beat the record for the fastest flight between England and Australia:15 days. Flying through lots of terrible weather conditions, she made some dangerous landings. She landed in Australia 19 days later. “But I don’t really know the rules,” said Angela nervously. “Well, let’s practice shooting (射门)! All you have to do is to score a goal (进球) to get a point,” suggested Lily. “OK! Let’s go and put our new sports clothes on!” answered May.
Peter chose two large sticks as goalposts (球门柱). Then, looking important, he said, “Since I’m the only boy here, I’ll be the goalkeeper (守门员). Let’s start!”
Angela was the first to shoot. She ran up to the ball and…oops! She fell over without even kicking the ball! Everyone started laughing. Lily was next. She took a great shot, but Peter made a good save. No goal! “Nice try, but I’m too good!” Peter said proudly as he threw the ball back. May tried her best, but her shot ended up wide of the goalpost. “What a pity!” said Peter, looking pleased with himself. “I didn’t expect to win, but it looks like no one can beat me, girls,” said Peter.
The little boy was getting a bit too big for his boots(靴子). I would like to have a try. Peter kicked the ball to me really hard. But I quickly kicked the ball out and sent the ball between the posts! “Ooh!” cried Peter, as he tried to avoid the powerful shot. “Goal! Well done!” shouted the girls. “What’s the matter, Peter?
