Once upon a time, there lived a great king. One day, he went out of his palace alone. The king had his reasons. His advisors always said something good to make him happy. This time, he wanted to talk with his people to get information directly (直接地) from them.
When it was getting dark, the king found that he lost his way. He looked around but couldn’t see any people. Then he went to the top of a hill. Luckily, he saw a small house. He walked over there.
As the king got closer, he noticed an old woman cleaning up outside the house. She didn’t know he was a king. She welcomed him by providing him with a plate of hot rice.
The king was very hungry, so he used his hands to get the hot food to eat. The hot food burnt his hand, so he dropped some rice on the floor.
“Oh you seem very impatient like the king,” the old woman said.
The king asked, “Why do you think the king is impatient?”
“The king had a big dream of taking over all his enemy’s (敌人) forts(城堡). He took over the larger forts but he didn’t pay attention (注意) to the smaller ones.”
“But wasn’t it a good thing?” the king asked.
The woman said, “You got hurt because of your impatience. Similarly, the king’s impatience caused many deaths. Instead, if the king first had taken over the smaller forts to make his army larger and stronger, it would be easier for him to take over the larger ones.”

In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us.
Or can they? A new TV show gives us a new look at plants. Shown on Jan.10 on Bilibili, it tells the secret lives of plants, and the wonderful and unbelievable ways that plants work.
▲ . In the rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” (战场). Only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Some plants spread (蔓延) their big leaves to reach light. But other plants may catch them up and get a lift. Finally, they are both overtaken (超过) by a fast-growing tree. Similarly, some trees may give out something to protect themselves.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, if a tree finds water, it will share it with others. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) in the soil as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease (疾病), it can tell nearby plants about it.
The TV show not only makes us amazed at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the needs of all life, including ourselves. We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every lungful of air that we breathe,” said David, the director of the show. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.
38. We can learn from the passage that plants ________.
A. can’t talk with each other B. aren’t able to walk
C can help each other in need D. are in great danger
39. From the passage we know that ________.
A. plants with small leaves get sunlight more easily
B. about 2% of plants can live in rainforests
C. plants in desert keeps water all by themselves
D. plants will know about the closer plants’ illnesses
40. Which is probably the sentence in the blank “ ▲ ” ?
A. Plants need water to live better
B. Plants can get sunlight from other plants
C. Plants compete against each other to live
D. Plants can share everything with each other
41. In the last paragraph, David probably agrees that ________.
A. plants are difficult to study B. plants play a big role in our lives
C. houseplants also need our care D. many wild plants are endangered
D
Disasters (灾难) can happen when people fly a drone (无人驾驶飞机) without knowing how to really control it. A drone flying into an airspace could cause a great disaster if it hit a jet plane. Some have become tangled (缠结) in power lines, costing thousands of dollars to get them down. If people try to remove the drone themselves, they could be killed by electricity (电). A falling drone can do great damage (毁坏) to buildings and people.
One terrible accident happened when an operator lost control of a drone. The drone pilot was flying it by his home when its rotors (螺旋桨) hit a tree. The drone went out of control, falling into a neighbor’s yard where a young child was playing. Sadly, this little boy lost his sight in one eye.
While drones can be harmful (有害的), they can also be very helpful. At a sports event, drones can be used to give people a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing. They are also becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them notice wildfires. Drones can closely watch populations of animals in the wild, especially endangered ones. In some very far-away places in the world, drones are the fastest way to take medicine to people who need it.
After the Nepal earthquake, the sky was filled with drones. They were fitted with cameras and their role was to fly over roads blocked by landslides to find people who are hurt or record any damage to bridges or buildings. The photos provided important information.
Some people think drones should be only used by governments (政府) to help when needed. Others think that as long as the rules are followed, there should be little risk to people. Drone makers say drones are exciting new technology and the future will be dominated (主导) by them.
42. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to (指代)?
A. The drones. B. The pilots. C. The jet planes. D. The power lines.
43. The writer develops Paragraph 2 mainly by _______.
A. giving an example B. giving reasons
C. making a discussion D. listing numbers
44. Which advantages (优点) of drones are mentioned (提到) in the passage?
