But if you overheard a British person say,“A Billy let some bees and honey in my sherbet(冰冻果露) last night,”would you understand what he meant? Probably not, but many native(本土的) speakers may not know what this person was saying either. The example above was a sentence that a London taxi driver might say to another member of his or her tribe. In plain English, the se ntence would be,“A customer left some money in my taxi last night.” So, what exactly is meant by“tribe”? A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines(定义) who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its owu“secret language”, as the BBC called it. If you work in a certain industry—education, for example, you may use slang(俚语) words that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, that only local s would understand. These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US, for example, the underground“ballroom”(舞厅) tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its language was showed in the 2018 FX show Pose. These secret words . don't always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people's everyday vocabulary. For example, the 九年级英语二模 第3页 共8页 phrase“to have beer”—meaning“to be in a conflict(冲突)”——was made popular by US rappers. Today,it's widely used by native English speakers all over the world. As BBC reporter Susic Dent wrote,“We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages, full of history and stories and in-jokes. And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never run out” 34. The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used . A. to prove that English is really hard for people to learn. B. to explain to the readers what the meaning of“tribe”is C. to teach readers how to communicate with taxi drivers D. to show the languages of tribes are hard to understand 35. According to this passage, what does 'tribe”refer to? A. All members of a family. B. Workers in a certain company. C. A group or class of people. D. People living in the same city. 30 What can we know about“secret languages”( A. They mostly came from different kinds of musical cultures. B. Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation. C. They first started in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. D. They have falled to become popular among young people. 7. What is Dent's attitude towards the future of“secret languages”? A. Confident. B. Worried. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful. C The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person's individual sound is produced when air from the lungs causes the vocal cords(声带) to vibrate(震颤). These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life. In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and tested a soft patch(片) that can be stuck onto a person's neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms(算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech. When a person loses their voice today, the easiest solution is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be slow and inconvenient, says Jun Chen, the paper's lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would be able to solve all these problems. Dr. Chen's device works based on something called the magnetoelastic effect. Basically, when tiny magnetic bits(磁性钻头) are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched. When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetic-field variations can be changed into electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the researchers recorded the signals as the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants spoke---whether aloud or in silence——with more than 90% accuracy. There is a way to go yet, for now the device can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on.Plus, to make it practical at scale, the researchers will need to co llect a lot more data. 38. In paragraph 1, the author mainly wants to tell us that . A. lungs are easily damaged B. the human voice is special C. vocal cords vibrate to produce sound D. voice disorders are a problem worthy of attention 九年级英语二模 第4页 共8页 39. Why does the author mention the magnetoelastic effect? A. To explain how it works. B. To present a solution. C. To introduce the challenge. D. To make a comparison. 40. What is the purpose of the soft patch? A. Predicting five different sentences. B. Destroying the background magnetic field. C. Slowing the movements of throat muscles. D. Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals. 41. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research C. Overcoming Voice Loss with a New Patch D. Finding the Principle of Communication Devices D Personally, there is nothing I love more than asking "stupid" questions, especially the ones that have no right answers. I remember once asking some kids what time it was, at home, in Singapore, and finally on the Moon. After a long silence, finally a shy girl ventured(试探地说) to say that it was "every time"followed by an energetic Einstein who shouted it was "no time". Both kids shared that week's Noble Prize because no humans live in that faraway world and time is created by humans. As a matter of fact, we are all good at asking questions by nature, but sadly as we age, we get used to the world around us and take things for granted. We became more results-oriented(注重结果的) and concentrate our efforts on success. If something is working, don't fix it or worry about the cause; just relax and go with the flow. Common belief may work well, but that does not mean it is always right. Throughout history, it has bccn those who have questioned common belief and those who have challenged our common-sense ideas of the world that have been the ones to have brought about major progress in human civilization. In 500 BC, the ancient Greeks wondcred whether the Earth was round because sailors on the sea had noticed that the farther south they went, the more different stars they saw in the sky. Why was the sky changing? Nearly 2,000 years later, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became interested in this question and ended up demonstrating the "crazy" concept of heliocentrism(日心说), in which the Sun lies at the center of the universe while the Earth circles around it at 30 kilometers per second. But if the Earth is spinning around so quickly, why aren't we being thrown off of the surface of the planet? The answer to this question would not be clear for another century. People like routine, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. While those who challenge common belief tend to be subjected to abuse, the progress of humankind would have otherwise been impossible without these persistent people and their "stupid" questions. 42. What commonly happens to us when we grow older according to the author? A. We focus too much on process. B. We still refuse to relax and go with the flow. C. We start to challenge common-sense ideas of the world. D. We gradually lose the ability to question common belief. 43. What's the correct order of the following statements? a. The ancient Greeks wondered whether the Earth was round. b. Galileo Galilei raised the concept of heliocentrism. c. We know about the concept of gravity. d. Sailors noticed something special. A. adcb B. adbc C. dabc D. dacb 九年级英语二模 第5页 共8页 44. Who might have solved the question "why aren't we being thrown off of the surface of the planet?" A. An ancient Greek scientist living in 500 BC. B. Galileo Galilei living between 1564 and 1642. C. Isaac Newton living botwe on 1643 and 1727. D. Albert Einstein living between 1879 and 1955. 45.
