David Cameron Makes Surprise Return to U.K. Government as Foreign Secretary
By Max Colchester
U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak named one of his predecessors, David Cameron, as foreign secretary, part of a surprise government shake-up aimed at dragging his Conservative Party back to the center ground as it languishes in the polls.
Cameron—a Tory moderate who quit as prime minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union—will now take one of the government's plum jobs after seven years in the political wilderness. He is the first former British prime minister to return to a cabinet post in more than 50 years.
Monday's unexpected move was widely seen by political analysts as part of Sunak's attempt to reimagine his Conservative Party, which has been in office for 13 years but is trailing the opposition Labour Party by a huge margin, with an election looming likely next year.
Cameron's arrival is a signal of Sunak's attempt to appeal to more traditional centrist Conservatives after a seven-year experiment that saw the Tories attempt to dominate the right wing of British politics. The former prime minister both campaigned against quitting the EU and for tighter ties with China.
After being elected in 2010, Cameron ushered in what he called a "golden era" of relations with China. Cameron continued to cheerlead Chinese investment even after leaving office.
Cameron's appointment came alongside a broader change in top ministers in Sunak's cabinet, including new ministers to run the health and the environment briefs. A YouGov poll at the start of the month showed that Labour had a 21-point lead.
