It's an increasingly familiar sight in US cities and suburbs: Workers wearing gloves, masks and other protective equipment fasten the backpack type devices with plastic tubes. They begin wetting trees, bushes and even house walls with pesticides (杀虫剂) targeting an ageold creature: mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes have long been carriers of some serious diseases in tropical (热带的) nations. Now, with climate change widening the insect's range of activities and lengthening its prime season, more Americans are turning to the booming industry of professional yard spraying. “If you like to be outside, it certainly makes it more pleasant not to be driving away mosquitoes and worrying about all the issues,” said a local citizen.
But the heavy use of chemicals worries scientists who fear it is harming pollinators (传粉者) and posing a growing threat to birds that eat insects. “The materials these companies spray kill all insects,” said Lynn Goldman, a professor of environmental health at the George Washington University. “They include bees, butterflies and all kinds of other beneficial insects that maybe people don't love but need. It's not good to have this kind of random killing which really messes up the whole ecosystem.”
More than 40% of insect species worldwide are threatened with extinction, including some pollinators such as bees and butterflies, according to the journal Biological Conservation. Mosquitokilling companies which have been multiplying with the skyrocketing demand, say they try to reduce pollinator loss but acknowledge there's still unavoidable damage. David Price, the director of a company offering technical services said, “We need our pollinators. They're incredibly important. But at the same time, it's necessary for us to kill mosquitoes that carry diseases.\”
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported sharp increases in illnesses spread by mosquitoes and other blood feeders. Zika, Chikungunya and West Nile viruses have turned up in the US. Asian tiger mosquitoes and yellow fever mosquitoes that originate in the tropics are now common in Southern states and have begun troubling Southern California.
1.Why are the workers mentioned in the beginning?
A.To show the difficulty in removing mosquitoes.
B.To introduce the mosquito problem to be discussed.
C.To imply the potential harm of pesticides to people.
D.To prove the commonness of mosquitoes in the US.
2.What is Lynn Goldman's attitude toward pesticide using?
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable.
C.Subjective. D.Opposed.
3.What message is conveyed in Paragraph 4?
A.Caution is the parent of safety.
B.Prevention is better than cure.
C.You can't have your cake and eat it.
D.Don't attend to two things at a time.
4.What can we infer about mosquitoes from the last paragraph?
A.Their range of activities is expanded.
B.Their population increases significantly.
C.They compete for survival with other insects.
D.They evolve to be more harmful and dangerous.
根据最后一段中的“Zika, Chikungunya and ... have begun troubling Southern California.” 故选A。
Logan Schneider was helping his brother tend his cherry orchard when disaster struck literally. While he was riding a tractor down a row of trees, a helicopter fell from the sky and landed directly on him.
Logan was wearing noisecanceling headphones just before the crash, so he didn't notice the helicopter until the plane broke the wires when it crashed. He barely had time to brace himself before a fire broke out and he was pinned against the steering wheel. As he managed to wriggle out of the wreckage, he heard pilot Cori Johnson screaming for help.
“I heard him screaming,”Logan recalled. “I looked and I saw him upside down hanging. Fire was everywhere. When I was in the moment I really wasn't thinking. I was just doing.”
Logan reached through the flames and unhooked the pilot's safety harness, allowing him to escape.
Once he was on his feet, Logan helped him get away just seconds before flames burst 30 feet into the air.
“Looking at what happened, I don't know how we both got out,” Logan said.
Firefighters arrived and had to deenergize the power lines before putting out the blaze. Both Cori and Logan were taken to the hospital with painful injuries. While Logan suffered seconddegree burns on his arms and muscle damage in his back, Cori had a broken arm and multiple burns.
“They rushed me and the guy to hospital,” Logan said. “I'm lucky to be alive.”
Logan has always planned to enroll in aviation school so he can become a commercial airline pilot. The crash has not deterred him, and he still plans to take to the skies at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington this fall. If anything, this fateful accident has strengthened his convictions and confirmed his beliefs.
