If you don’t know what ChatGPT is or dislike the idea of working with a robot, enjoy your retirement. So, as for the present you should get for your manager this festive season, a good choice may be anything made of paper. Undoubtedly, it can serve as a useful reminder of where the digital world’s limitations lie. Several recent studies highlighted the enduring value of this ancient technology in several different aspects. A study by Vicki Morwitz of Columbia Business School, Yanliu Huang of Drexel University and Zhen Yang of California State University, Fullerton, finds that paper calendars produce different behaviours from digital calendars. Users of old-fashioned calendars made more detailed project plans than those looking at an app, and they were more likely to stick to those plans. Simple dimensions seem to count. The ability to see lots of days at once on a paper calendar matters. Here is another study from Maferima Touré-Tillery of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Lili Wang of Zhejiang University. In their study, the researchers showed people an ad for a bookseller and then asked them to select some of the books that were being promoted. Those using paper to fill out the questionnaire chose more highbrow (高雅的) books on average than those using the tablet. The researchers believe that people make virtuous decisions on paper because it feels more significant than a digital screen. In a study from 2017 researchers found that people assigned a greater value to the physical version of a product than its digital one. They found shoppers were willing to pay more for reading materials in printed form than those they could only download online. Technology can close the gap between paper and screens, but not entirely. Mastery of digital technologies is vital. But a sense of touch, authenticity and humanity still matter. 1.How does the author lead in the topic?( ) D A.By telling a story. B.By giving examples. C.By raising questions. D.By describing a situation. So, as for the present you should get for your manager this festive season, a good choice may be anything made of paper. 2.Why can paper calendars make users stick to plans better?( ) D A.They are a better reminder. B.They can show more detailed plans. C.They provide chances for people to practise writing. D.They provide a better view of many days’ plans at a time. Users of old-fashioned calendars made more detailed project plans than those looking at an app, and they were more likely to stick to those plans.及The ability to see lots of days at once on a paper calendar matters. 3.Which of the following does paper influence based on Paragraph 3?( ) A A.Decisions. B.Sympathy. C.Efficiency. D.Responsibility. Those using paper to fill out the questionnaire chose more highbrow books on average than those using the tablet. The researchers believe that people make virtuous decisions on paper because it feels more significant than a digital screen. 故选A项。 4.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?( ) B A.Paper posters will greatly promote sales online. B.E-magazines are thought less valuable than paper ones. C.Seeing others buy reading materials will increase one’s purchasing desire. D.People prefer items made of paper instead of other materials. 根据第四段中的people assigned a greater value to the physical version of a product than its digital one以及They found shoppers were willing to pay more for reading materials in printed form than those they could only download online. 刷阅读理解 B [湖南师大附中、长沙一中2024期中联考] People have been predicting the death of cable TV (有线电视) for a long time, but this really might be it. Just a decade ago, nearly all Americans paid for packages of TV channels from cable or satellite companies. That started to drop slowly at first and then far more quickly in the past few years. Now, the share of American homes that pay for traditional TV services is approaching 50%, according to expert Craig Moffett and S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Kagan research group. For comparison, cellphones were around for decades before the percentage of Americans who didn’t have a landline (座机) at home reached 50%, around 2017. Maybe it seems predictable that cable TV would go the way of the landline. I promise you that it was not necessarily obvious. Old habits die hard. Old industries that make a lot of people rich die even harder. And don’t forget that some new technology habits catch on fast but don’t stick. What may be a final drop in America’s cable TV industry is a big deal. It shows that technology can change deep-rooted ways of doing things slowly, and then suddenly. Ian Olgeirson, research director at Kagan who has been following America’s TV market for about 20 years, told me that he was surprised by how quickly the monthly cable bill went from being standard to outdated for many Americans. Olgeirson and other TV experts I’ve been speaking to didn’t single out a turning point in cable TV’s big drop. They said the downward trend was more like a series of progressive changes piling up. It’s clear that the cable TV system that for decades brought joy and headaches to tens of millions of Americans is wearing thin. The wild card is whether Americans keep turning away from cable and satellite TV relatively slowly, or whether it will fail suddenly. I have always loved TV. I felt like a real grown-up when I first started to pay a huge bill for television, partly to watch my favourite football team. I had reduced my cable TV package, but then a few months ago I was told that my bill was going to increase by about$10 a month. That was it. I’m a no-cable household now, too. 1.What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us about cable TV?( ) A A.Its falling popularity. B.Its increasing payments. C.Its various TV channels. D.Its high service standard. People have been predicting the death of cable TV for a long time, but this really might be it.和That started to drop slowly at first and then far more quickly in the past few years. Now, the share of American homes that pay for traditional TV services is approaching 50%可知,第一段主要描述了有线电视受欢迎程度的下降这一现象。故选A项。 2.Why does the author mention cellphones and landlines in Paragraph 2?( ) B A.To prove technology can change the world. B.To show it is not easy for cable TV to go away. C.To illustrate there is no market left for cable TV. D.To explain technology can bring fortune to people. 3.Which of the following is beyond Olgeirson’s expectations?( ) C A.America’s TV market was down suddenly. B.The death of cable TV will come in about 20 years. C.Americans turned away from cable TV so quickly. D.There are still many Americans showing interest in cable TV. Ian Olgeirson… he was surprised by how quickly the monthly cable bill went from being standard to outdated for many Americans. 4.What would be the best title for the text?( ) D A.Cable TV Won’t Be Replaced by Satellite TV B.Cable TV Brought Joy to Americans C.Cable TV Has Existed for Decades D.Cable TV Is the New Landline & prep. When Pete Eckert started going blind, he decided to channel his feelings of loss into art.
