In particular, body language is used to express power through expansive (扩张性的) postures. You might know about Amy Cuddy’s famous TED talk and her incredible insights on how posture changes our thoughts. Cuddy and her team study body language, particularly what they call “high-power” and “low-power” poses. “High-power” poses refer to the act of taking a posture of confidence, which can help you feel more self-confident, even after only two minutes. Typical high-power poses are about opening up. You stretch and expand your body to take up as much space as possible. For example, people are doing high-power poses when they lean back in their chairs, and put their hands behind their heads. Meanwhile, people take low-power positions when they’re feeling helpless or defeated. They close up, arms around their body, taking up the smallest space. 19 Some even more recent studies took this even further: A study by researchers from Columbia University and Harvard University showed that body language symbolising power can actually affect our decision-making, unintentionally. The researchers measured the desire for risk of participants in either expansive, powerful poses or constricted (受到局限的) poses. Those in the powerful poses not only felt more powerful and in control, but were 45% more likely to take risky actions. “This isn’t about what your body language is communicating to others; it’s about what your body language is communicating to you. Your body language is changing your mind, which changes your behaviour, which changes your outcomes,” said Cuddy. So if you want to take advantage of the benefits of these poses to live a healthier and happier life, where should you start? 20 1.Which is probably a low-power pose according to the text?( ) B A.Standing with your legs open. B.Sitting with your hands crossed in the lap. C.Arms raised in a “V” above the head. D.Sitting with your arms spreading out on the chair. Meanwhile, people take low-power positions when they’re feeling helpless or defeated. They close up, arms around their body, taking up the smallest space. 21 2.What can we say about people in the expansive poses?( ) D A.They are hesitant. B.They are very shy. C.They feel out of control. D.They feel more confident. 根据第三段中的“High-power” poses refer to the act of taking a posture of confidence, which can help you feel more self-confident, even after only two minutes. Those in the powerful poses not only felt more powerful and in control, but were 45% more likely to take risky actions. 22 3.What is the text mainly about?( ) C A.The posture of confidence. B.Cuddy’s research on behaviour. C.The surprising power of body language. D.The research on decision-making. In particular, body language is used to express power through expansive postures. 23 4.What might be talked about in the following paragraph?( ) B A.How to correct bad habits. B.How to improve your body language. C.How posture affects your health. D.Why good posture matters for employees. 24 B A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question along with that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words. While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestion, those of children are known to be particularly influenced, said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University. Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally. Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic?” the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory. 25 To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic?” But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely. And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids, Broaders said, as hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.“It certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.” In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to “try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event. Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.” 26 1.What can we know about gestures from the text?( ) C A.They are rarely used by people. B.They don’t have much function. C.They have certain effects on children. D.They are often used by social workers. A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question along with that gesture. 27 2.Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders?( ) D A.Children are easy to tell lies. B.These gestures are very attractive. C.These gestures are used frequently. D.Children’s memories are affected easily. While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestion, those of children are known to be particularly influenced 28 3.Which may cause a wrong reply according to the text?( ) D A.Where are you going? B.What will you have for lunch? C.What else did you see last night? D.Did you cheat in the last English examination? 29 4.What does the underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 5 mean?( ) B A.Tell apart. B.Pass on. C.Mix up. D.Break up. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids 和后面的“It certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.” 31 Anna had been job-hunting for months.
