She always wanted to help others when she was young. At eight, she learned that many children had no clean water in Africa, and she was shocked. When her school began raising money to build wells there, she asked her parents to stop holding a birthday party for her each year. Also, she asked her friends to donate $9 each to the project in Africa instead of giving her birthday presents. One year later, on June 12, it was Rachel’s ninth birthday. She put up a birthday page on the Internet, with a goal of raising $300. However, Rachel was able to raise only $200.
