Yingge Dance is a type of folk dance with a history of more than 300 years. It is popular mainly in the Chaoshan area of Guangdong Province. It's said that the traditional dance developed from the NuoOpera (傩戏) performed in different parts of China to welcome the spring, drive away evil（邪恶的）spirits, and pray for good luck. While ancient Nuo Opera tells stories from different folk tales, Yingge Dance is based on the adventures of the"108 Heroes" of Liangshan Mountain, best known from the classic novel The Water Margin. Mostly performed during festivals, the dance usually includes an even number of dancers, from at least 12 to as many as 108 ones. The performers wear facial makeup to represent the heroes. Each of them holds short sticks and jumps up and down with powerful movements and strong rhythms(节奏). The performances are not only a must watch for the local people, but also an attraction for lots of tourists. With more young people falling in love with it, the old dance will shine again with vigor （活力）.
