Icy trip of a life time
Carlien Wolmarans, 17, never thought she could go to Antarctica. “It’s pure nature at that place. I can really be myself there,” she said. This Saturday the South African high school student’s dream will come true.
On October 18, Wolmarans, together with other seven teenagers, will set sail from Argentina on a two-week adventure. The eight teenagers come from six countries. They won the chance after 10 days of hard training in Switzerland.
The first part of their expedition will be about sightseeing. But then will come the hard work. The young people will have to clean up trash from the beach and sea. They will also fix coral reefs and water channels in deserts.
It is not a reality TV show. It’s Pangaea, which stands for Pan Global Adventure for Environmental Action. The Pangaea Expedition connects young people from all over the world. It will last four years.
Twelve teams of explorers will cross all of the oceans and visit the South and North Poles. Anyone aged 13 to 20 can apply at mikehorn.com. The program will choose kids from each continent for training camps. The best will go on a free 10- to 12-day voyage.
The explorer Mike Horn will lead the young people on his Earth-friendly ship. Their goal: to learn how to help save the planet.
