真题再现
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher(社会学科老师) asked me to enter a writing contest(参加写作比赛), I said no without thinking(未经思考). I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language(我的第二语言). Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic(泰坦尼克号的沉没) by acting out a play(表演剧本), where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself(努力工作), I think you have a good shot(有很大机会) at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try(试一试).I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington(莱克星顿) to warn(警告) people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth(此处意味着从马的角度讲述故事). Not a brilliant idea(不是一个高明的想法), but funny, and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night(夜间狂飙,speed-sped-sped)? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized(同情) immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit(放弃). But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling(检查拼写). I asked my older sister to correct my grammar(纠正我的语法). I checked out(借出) a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud(大声笑了) and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.(获胜的念头已经变成了写作的乐趣。如果我没有获胜,我也不在意)
