influencespeoplesfeelingstowardthethankful
personandthepersonwhoisthanked.
In one experiment, participants(参与者)
weretaskedwithreadingamoviereviewdraftand
underliningeyecatchingpartsforthereviewers
benefit.Firsttheysawanexample.Severallinesof
textwereunderlined,asthetaskrequired,but
manymistakeswerealsocorected,showingefort
thatwentbeyondthetask.Someparticipantscould
seeahandwritennotefromthereviewersaying,
“Thankyousomuchforcatchingthosemistakes!”
Afterward,participantsunderlinedpartsinanother
articlebythereviewer.Thenresearcherscounted
how manymistakesparticipantscorected,and
askedthemhowmuchtheymightliketobefriends
withthereviewer.
Theresultsshowedthatparticipantswhohad
seenanoteofgratitudeweremorewilingtocorect
mistakesandhelpout,andmorelikelytowantto
becomefriendswith thereviewer, than those
whohadnt.
Algoeandherteamalsodiscoveredfromother
surveyquestionsthatparticipantswantedtohelp
andconnectwiththepersonreceivingthegratitude.
“Thatsbecausereceivinggratitudemarksyouasa
personwhoisefectiveatbeingsupportiveor
helpful,”saysAlgoe.
Thesefindingsshowthatexpressinggratitude
notonlystrengthenstherelationshipsbetweenthe
peopleinvolvedbutalsoafectsthepeoplewhosee
itinwaysthatcouldgenerateresponses(回应)
withinthegroup.Ifpeopleinagroupnoticeothers
goodactsandthankthemfortheirkindnesses,the
wholegroupcouldbeencouragedtobekinderto
oneanother.
