As the President of Ariel Investments, I am often asked how to cultivate(培养) green hands to be qualified for a new job within a short time. My memories take me straight back to the days when I worked for John W.Rogers.
While in college, I worked as an intern (实习生) at Ariel Investments. As the youngest girl of six kids from a single mom, I had very little knowledge of the business world. When I graduated, I decided to return to the company to improve myself.
At the age of 22, my perspective was greatly influenced by lunching with the company's founder and then president, John W. Rogers. He told me that I would often find myself in the company of rich and successful people with big titles, lots of degrees and lots of experience. And yet, my ideas could still be as good or even better, he said. This early advice became the guiding force that has helped me throughout my entire career. When I was starting out, I thought my inexperience was holding me back, but John said that it was a good thing. He told me that being inexperienced means that you have a fresh point of view.
As my tutor, John encouraged me to be brave. As my boss, he took some giant leaps of faith to support me. Because of our first lunch and the years of support that followed, I never thought twice about speaking up, raising my hand or taking a seat at the table. Staying in the background was never a choice. But John's advice came with one important warning. I needed to control my attitude. It's one thing to be firm but quite another to be rude. Similarly, there is a fine line between confidence and overconfidence. With that in mind, I have had to learn to balance the way I act around others. As someone once told me, “the goal is to be nonthreatened and nonthreatening at the same time.”

C
Looking back is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see what has led you here and, hopefully, how society has changed and improved.
Take, for instance, my career goal. First, I wanted, in 1999, to be a “farmer”, soon archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.
I had grown up in a football loving family. I remember the exact moment when I said “I'm sad I can't be a footballer” while watching the game with Dad as a preteen. He asked why not. “Because I'm not a boy.” He immediately responded, “You can, if you want to.” “Yeah, I suppose so,” I sighed, “but no one watches women's football.”
Looking back, I can see exactly why I felt like that. At school, there was an unwritten rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were for the boys. I'd never seen a women's football match on TV. You see, you can't be what you can't see, and lack of representation leads, at best, to misunderstanding, and at worst, fear and negative opinions.
Today, the Lionesses will take on Scotland in the World Cup, and people across the world will tune in—over 950,000 tickets have been sold so far. But, although women's football is one of FIFA's best investments—with a pound for pound return, the majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that's because viewing statistics are lower than those of men's, but the rise in support shows the demand is there. Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.
Today, I'll be cheering on the Lionesses, because it'll mean talented, skillful female footballers being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe, a little girl believing that she can also be a Lioness one day.
8.Which of the following best describes the author's career goals?
A.Realistic. B.Changeable.
C.Consistent. D.Longsought.
9.Why didn't the author believe she could be a footballer?
A.She was not talented enough.
B.People lost faith in women's football.
C.Girls were forbidden to play football.
D.She had no example to follow.
10.What can we know about women's football from Paragraph 5?
A.It's better paid than men's.
B.It is increasingly popular.
C.It has no market demand.
D.It is not profitable.
11.What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A.Society advances with time.
B.Women deserve equal rights.
C.Each goal is worth pursuing.
D.Hard work always pays off.

The days of having to carry a phone charger everywhere could soon be over. Michigan researchers have revealed a major breakthrough in harvesting energy from human motion. They say it could lead to smartphones powered for a week by the motion of a swipe(重击).
Michigan State University's lowcost device, known as a nanogenerator, has already been tested. Scientists successfully operated an LCD touch screen, a bank of 20 LED lights and a flexible keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the aid of a battery. The groundbreaking findings, published in the journal Nano Energy, suggest “We're on the path towards wearable devices powered by human motion,” said Nelson Sepulveda, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and lead researcher of the project.
“What I foresee, relatively soon, is the capability of not having to charge your cell phone for an entire week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your movement,” said Sepulveda, whose research is funded by the National Science Foundation.
Electrical energy is created when the device is compressed by human motion. The completed device is as thin as a sheet of paper. The device used to power the LED lights was palmsized, while the device used to power the touch screen was as small as a finger. Advantages such as being lightweight, flexible and lowcost could make it a promising and alternative method in the field of Mechanicalenergy harvesting.
The device also becomes more powerful when folded. Sepulveda said, “You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once, and again, and again, it's much smaller and has more energy. Now it may be small enough to put in a specially made heel of your shoe so it creates power each time your heel strikes the ground.”
Sepulveda and his team are also developing technology that would transmit the power generated by the heel strike to, say, a wireless headset.
12.What does the underlined word “device” in the second paragraph probably refer to?
A.A piece of equipment.
B.A special kind of smartphone.
C.A touch screen.
D.A flexible keyboard.
13.What can we learn about Nelson Sepulveda in the passage?
A.He works as a journalist writing for Nano Energy.
B.He plays a major role in the project of the nanogenerator.
C.He invented a type of batteryfree smartphone.
D.He collects funds for the National Science Foundation.
14.What can we learn about the nanogenerator from the passage?
A.It becomes more powerful when kept flat.
B.It has already come into market in the US.
C.It is lightweight and flexible though expensive.
D.It makes it possible to produce power by walking.
15.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To persuade people to buy the device.
B.To bring in a new way to save energy.
C.To introduce a breakthrough in science.
D.To honor Nelson Sepulveda for his contributions.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I'm an English selflearner, but English is not my first language. Today I am an English teacher. I would like to say that failures are not disastrous. Have faith, keep moving on, and never give up hope, and you will see your hard work pay off.
I was a slow learner when I was little. Before five, I couldn't even speak in full sentences. Unlike most other children, I seldom interacted with others; I neither cried nor threw tantrums. My extreme quietness made my parents wonder if I was mentally slow, but they were not sure. Actually, I have to confess that my memories of my early childhood are quite unclear.
My learning problems were the result of my mother taking some medicine when she became pregnant with me. Although I was born without any physical defects (缺陷), the medicine did affect my early intellectual development. When I was in elementary school, I learned very slowly and was as quiet as a doll. While my teacher was teaching, my mind often wandered outside the classroom to the playground. As a fifth grader, I finally started interacting with my classmates. That was the first time in my memory that I had some friends.
After heading at full speed for my junior high education, my learning situation got stuck in the mud again. In my country, students entering junior high school had to take an IQ test. It was a test for schools to evaluate students' learning abilities so that they could arrange them into different levels of classes based on their IQ test scores. I was placed in the “bottom class” as a result of my belowaverage IQ score. Most of my teachers taught us using easy and slow methods because they considered us incapable of learning much. However, I never wanted to lose faith that I might one day succeed. That's when I discovered a strong passion for English.

Paragraph 1:
At the age of 13, I found myself deeply interested in English. Aside from reading English textbooks, I developed a habit of reading English magazines, listening to English programs, and keeping an English diary. Moreover, I summarized almost every story in books or magazines to improve my writing skills. In order to strengthen my speaking ability, I often told myself those stories in English. I realized that no matter how hard or how unfair my situation was, I could choose to keep moving on rather than give up. Where there is a will, there is a way. With over 10 years of selfstudy, I successfully passed the exams and became an English teacher.
Paragraph 2:
My story proves everyone has the ability to learn. Success has nothing to do with IQ. No matter what you are interested in, you need to set a goal, and keep yourself working for that goal. Never lose faith or let go of your hope. Hope brings about passion. Passion makes you move forward, and once you learn with passion, your dreams will come true.
