Lu Mei is an illustrator(
wxy
)and also a qipao lover. She has been drawing pictures about women in qipao
for years.
Lu Meis interest in qipao has something to do with Eileen Chang, also Zhang Ailing(1920 - 1995),a famous
Chinese writer. In 2007,someone asked Lu if she could illustrate a book about Eileen Chang and the clothing Ei
leen Chang wrote about. Lu consented and started her interest on the dress. Since then, she has fallen in love with
drawing qipao.
Lus new book Cheongsam shows changes of the dress in the past 100 years. When people first wore qipao in
the late 1910s,it looked like the wide robes(
z{
)worn by men of the time. In the 1930s,people made the dress
with a closefitting cut and higher slits(
|}
). She said,“Qipao has become a symbol of traditional Chinese culture
once again, but todays dress is different from what it used to be. Because of the film In the Mood for Love, the dress
now is much more closefitting.”
In Lus everyday life, she doesnt usually wear qipao. “Instead of wearing the dress,I hope my readers can
learn the cultural meaning behind the traditional clothing—to be independent(

)and to keep on learning,”
she said in her book.

Feeling hot?So is the Earth. Because of problems like climate change and bad ways of farming, much of the
planets land is drying up. What can we do to solve this problem?
One thing the United Nations did was to create a holiday. In 1994,the UN started World Day to Combat
Desertification and Drought(
),to let more people know about desertification. It is on
June 17 every year.
Desertification happens when healthy land—land full of water and nutrients(
)—becomes desert,which
is dry and unhealthy. Every year,20,000 to 50,000 square kilometers of the Earths land is lost to desertification.
In Africa, scientists expect that two thirds of Africas healthy land will be lost by 2025.
Desertification sometimes happens because of climate change,as big and fast changes in temperature can kill
plants and trees.
However,it also happens because people use land too much, and in bad ways to grow food on their farms.
Growing too many plants in the same soil in too short time can take away the soils nutrients faster than the soil can
make new ones. That can turn the soil into dry sand, like a desert.
The UN suggests some different actions to stop desertification. One is to teach people better ways of farming,
including the use of better fertilizers(
). Another is reforestation which means planting more trees. One country
that has done a lot of that is China. Today China has 61 million hectares(
)of reforested land—more than
anywhere else in the world.
( )11. What is land like if desertification happens?
A. It is full of water. B. It has more nutrients.
C. It is dry and unhealthy. D. It is suitable to live on.
( )12. What do scientists predict about Africa in 2025?
A. Growing plants will help Africa have more healthy land.
B. Most of Africas healthy land will get dry and unhealthy.
C. Africa will have about 50,000 square kilometers of healthy land.
D. Africa will have about 20,000 square kilometers of desertification.
( )13. Why isnt it good to grow too many plants in the same soil?
A. Because it can change the climate faster. B. Because it can change plants into bad soil.
C. Because it can change healthy land into forests. D. Because it can take away the soils nutrients faster.
( )14. Which of the following does not cause desertification?
A. Reforestation. B. Using land too much.
C. Using poor fertilizers. D. Climate change.
( )15. Whats the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The causes of desertification. B. The importance of reforestation.
C. The UNs plans for improving farming. D. The UNs suggestions for fighting desertification.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two young men from Germany who loved reading stories. As university
students, they became interested in folktales—traditional stories or legends(
)that people told again and again,
often for generations(

and the other countries. Between 1812 and 1814,two books from the brothers came out in German.
17. The worldwide popularity of the three has lasted till now. The collections became known in Eng
lish as Grimms Fairy Tales.
18. As we can see,in the past, many people in Germany believed that forests were dangerous
places. So in the Grimms stories,a forest is often the home of bad people(like evil witches in “Hansel and
Gretel”),talking animals and other magical beings.
Most people today think of these stories as fairy tales for children. 19. Many of their early tales were
completely dark and scary. Later, the brothers changed some parts of the primary stories. 20. This made
them more proper for children. Like the early tales, though, each story still has something educational:work hard,
be good and listen to your parents.

buy smile find something huge why waste we for simple
After a whole week of rain,we finally had a comfortable, beautiful summer day outside. My friends and I were
riding bikes to a town near our city when we 36 a yard sale. We saw some 37 boxes with clothes, shoes
and some old chairs for sale. Lots of people were talking and 38 in the sunshine.
Seeing all of this brought back memory of my childhood. My mom was a talented yard sale 39 ,and most of
my clothes came from yard sales. I used to hate going there. But on a special day,I saw that they also sold old
books there,so I changed my mind. After that,I always looked through the books there and sometimes my mom
would buy one or two books 40 me. Soon a large part of my home library came from yard sales. Since then,I
have regarded the secondhand books as the priceless(
p8
)things.
The yard sale is a very meaningful thing. 41 do we have yard sales?First,we clear out our old things and
sell them to others. But it isnt 42 for the money. More importantly,we can meet old friends and know new
neighbors. Its the yard sale that brings 43 together.
The yard sale teaches us something about life, too. It encourages us not to 44 anything. We cant really own
45 ,after all. All we get is to have the thing for some time. Then its time to let it go and pass it on!

I loved volunteering in the panda base. 50 was hard work, but it was worth seeing those cute pandas every
