At the fifth Shenzhen Intangible Cultural Heritage Week on March 3, there was a performance (演) that caught everyone’s eyes. A woman in her 70s named Wang Xiaodan performed a kind of Chinese opera called Kunqu with her four-year-old grandson. It was amazing to see how they both worked together to make such a beautiful show.
Kunqu is a kind of Chinese opera. It is one of three oldest forms in the world, together with Greek Tragedy and Indian Sanskrit Drama. But out of these three, only Kunqu is still performed today!
The grandson named “Yumi”, is very talented (有天赋的). He started performing Kunqu when he was only two years old! He loves traditional Chinese opera and looks up to a famous person named Mei Lanfang for inspiration (灵感). Yumi spends a lot of time practicing his skills and even follow the movements of other performers he sees on TV.
Yumi’s family is very supportive (支持的) and helps him get ready for his performances. Wang Xiaodan made some training plans to get his performance skills better. Yumi’s mother and aunt supported him by caring his life.
