Module & Theme: Book 3 Module 2 Making a Difference – The Power of Good
Topic Context: The topic context of this unit is “human and society”. Students are supposed to develop the positive attitudes of helping others and have the awareness of building a human community with a shared future. The passage The Power of Good is a biography of Nicholas Winton who is the British Schindler, helping 669 children from the hand of the Nazis. By studying this passage, students will have a deeper understanding of helping people in need. In addition, the structure of biography is well-worth analyzing and applying in writing. The learning strategy behind is reading to learn.
Type & Period: Reading and Writing & 1 Period
Teacher: LI Haoyi from Harbin No.1 High School
Students’ Analysis:
The target students are in Grade One from the senior high school. They have read several passages in the form of biography, but they haven’t had a detailed look at this genre. Their understanding about the overall structure and reasoning process of the passage needs to be improved to some extend. Meanwhile, teacher ought to provide them with platform to show their independent judgement and opinions, which is helpful for involvement in the classroom.
Learning Objectives:
· To skim the passage and understand the gist and structure of it
· To scan the passage and get detailed information about the life of Nicholas Winton
· To learn to develop the quality of being good and building a human community with a shared future
· To write a mini biography
