On a drive to my appointment on Halloween,I thought about how life should be going.I was 30,a mother of three daughters—twin fiveyearolds and a oneyearold.I should be playing in the park with them or visiting the library. But once again,I needed this appointment.
It had been a year since I'd been diagnosed with cancer. My surgery was over,so it's just a routine blood test.As always, there was a fear that the cancer had returned. But today,it was more than that.I felt alone, tired, and sad.My family and friends were busy with their lives, and I did not want to burden them with my feelings of unhappiness.I just wanted to see the positive things in life and be truly grateful—without reservations.
When we finally arrived,we sat in a crowded waiting room.It was pretty uneventful (平淡的) until my youngest daughter, dressed up like an angel, walked up to a complete stranger and said,“Tweet.” This was what she said,“Trick or Treat,” coached previously by her twin sisters. The old woman, who was in a wheelchair and accompanied by her caregiver, knew exactly what my daughter meant. She ordered her helper to take her over to the vending machine. She put in enough money to give each of my girls a treat. This caring act started a run on the vending machine.Soon, everyone had a candy bar or bag of chips ready for impromptu trick or treat, which was beyond their expectations.
Everyone was smiling and laughing, and my daughters were extremely happy with their good fortune. Here were these people, facing whoknowswhat health difficulties, and they only thought of giving three little girls some Halloween fun.It was a lesson for me about how good, kind and generous people are.The gratitude I felt was overwhelming (压倒性的),and the thankfulness didn't fade away.

Getting kids interested in science at an early age is very important. It's easier than you think. It is happening all around us,and you can use everyday things to encourage your children's interest and knowledge.
Most parents believe that it is difficult to help their children with science. But you don't need a high scientific degree to teach young children science. All you need is that you're willing to try,to see the world, and to take the time to encourage their natural curiosity.
You can help by having an active attitude toward science yourself. Then start simply by asking your children questions about the things you see every day.And then listen to their answers without judging them, which will improve their confidence, and help you decide just what your children do or do not know.
Different kids have different interests so they need different kinds of science projects.A rock collection may interest your young daughter but your older son may need something more to do with it.Knowing your child is the best way to find enjoyable learning activities. Here are some more tips.
—Choose activities that are the right level of difficulty. If you are not sure, pick something easier.
—Read the suggested ages on any projects, books, then make sure that the activity is proper for your child.
—Consider how well the type of the project matches your child's personality and learning style.
—Let your child choose the project or activity. It's easy enough to ask.Rather than overwhelm him, suggest 2 or 3 possibilities. When a child picks something he is interested in,he will enjoy it and learn more from it.

Food brings us together and connects us to our families, friends, nature and to foreign cultures.Food is universal.Food waste,on the other hand, has become a universal problem,as it significantly contributes to climate change.Luckily, there are countries that have laws to require supermarkets or other businesses to donate unsold food.
About one third of all food grown for human consumption is thrown out or wasted according to the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO).This creates both environmental and financial problems, since traditional agriculture requires large amounts of resources including land and water.Food production is also a major cause of greenhouse gases and climate change.
Food waste occurs at every step of food production from the field to the store. In fact, fruits, vegetables, and roots have the highest waste.Donating food that is unusually wasted does not mean giving away damaged food.Sometimes it is simply a case of food being mislabeled,a can that has a torn label,or slightly bruised fruit.
To reduce both the financial and environmental pressure,Italy passed a law to encourage businesses and farmers to donate unsold food to charities.Companies that donate their leftovers will pay lower taxes on waste removal.
Waste management is also a very costly thing for governments. In fact, according to Global Citizen, in 2016,Italy spent over $13.3 billion on waste management. The idea behind the law is that when it is economic and convenient, companies will happily follow the law.
France was the first country to pass a food donation law in 2016.It required supermarkets that are at least 4,300 square feet to donate unsold food to charity.Since then,90 percent of supermarkets began donating food, the number of which was 66 percent before the law.
To increase food donations,Israel passed a law in 2018 to ensure that unused food from restaurants, hotels and other places goes to the people that need it most.

第二节
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I wasn't the most popular kid in my first year of high school, not even close.I was not interested in fashion.I preferred reading to sports, and I had difficulty talking to boys.As a result, the first year of high school had not been kind to me.I had no close friends.
The girl,Ashley, was very different from me.She was fashionable, and she was very artistic, listening to bands I had never heard of.She was quite popular. We were always in the same classes throughout school, but didn't talk much.
During summer school, the teacher asked us to pair up(结对) on a school project.Ashley didn't seem to like working with me at first, but she gave in.I guessed it was because none of her “cool” friends were in the class. We met at the library to work on the project.Ashley did most of the talking. We sat by each other the rest of the summer and when classes ended,we continued to hang out.
I admired Ashley;she was the kind of person I thought I wanted to be.I began to wear the clothes she wore.I quit reading and started watching the TV programs that Ashley watched.I decided to take an art class though I had really wanted to take the theatre. When we started school again,I met Ashley's group of friends, the “cool girls”.She was the leader of the group. To fit in with the group,I followed them around, laughing at their jokes and agreeing with their opinions I actually disagreed with. But I didn't say much.
One day,I went to join the group again. They were chatting without noticing my arrival. One girl said,“Ashley, she just follows you around, trying to be you.She copies you;she doesn't have her own personality(个性).” Ashley replied,“I wish she could find the group she actually belonged to.” I was shocked and sad.I thought I had fit in with them.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。
2.请按如下格式作答。
I ran home and told my mother what had happened.
Over the next month,I went through a lot of changes.
【参考范文】
I ran home and told my mother what had happened. She just hugged me while I cried for hours.I felt lonely and sad.The advice my mother gave was so simple.I had heard it a million times, but this time it was impressive: “Just be yourself and people will like you for who you are.” Hearing that,I stopped crying and decided to find out who I was. That was exactly what I did.I didn't hang out with Ashley and her group any longer.
Over the next month,I went through a lot of changes. I dropped the art class and joined the theatre.I began making new friends who liked me for who I was.I continued reading, and developed my own opinions.I never again followed the crowd.I built up the courage to participate in each of my school play, and played lead roles. The friends I made in the theatre are still my great friends. When looking back,I think it was the year that I found out the person I was going to be.
