Lesson 7
Letters of Apology
Objectives
Compose appropriate letters of apology;
Make an apology clearly and sincerely;
Avoid wordiness in business writing;
Keep pronouns consistent.
Objectives
Each of us has, at one time or another, said or done something that we wish we hadn’t said or done. Rather than dwell on the mistake, however, we should take quick action to remedy the problem and then get on with life. An effective letter of apology is an important part of that process and can help turn “ lemons into lemonade ” and actually improve a relationship.
A letter of apology is often better than a face-to-face or telephone apology because you can take time to get the words right. It’s also better to write when you don’t know if the other person is willing to speak to you. Besides, a letter doesn’t oblige him/her to respond immediately; there’s time to absorb the message and decide how to react.
Getting Started
Read the following dialogue, identifying the reason for apology and how Steven responded to it.

Lily: I owe you an apology, Mr. Steven.
Steven: What do you mean, Lily?
Lily: I’m terribly sorry about the appointment last Thursday. I hope you’ll
excuse me.
Steven: Forget it. I’d have done exactly as you did if I had been in your situation.
Lily: That’s very kind of you to say so.
Getting Started
Recall one of the occasions where you did something wrong. What did you do to make it up?
