Lesson 3
Letters of Invitation
Objectives
Compose appropriate invitation letters;
Adopt proper style and tone in business writing;
Provide essential information in a letter of invitation;
Identify simple sentences.
Objectives
A letter of invitation is often used to invite a guest to a party, event or celebration while conveying more information than a traditional invitation card. Invitations can range from a casual one to a formal one according to the relationship people have with the invitees and situations. Most business letters call for a formal style.
The letter of invitation should include the basic facts such as the name or type of the event, date, time and venue. It serves two purposes: one is to invite the guest to the event and the other is to ensure that the guest is going to attend. When sending these letters, organizers should set aside enough time to enable the guests to take consideration and make arrangements for the event.
Getting Started

J: Fine. Look, I’d like to discuss our new product with you. Would you like to have a lunch at the
Atlas sometime next week?
D: That sounds nice. When exactly?
J: Well, how about Wednesday?
D: Hmm. I’m afraid I can’t make it on Wednesday. I’ve got a meeting all day.
J: Does Thursday suit you?
D: Yeah, that would be fine. What time?
J: Shall we say 11:30?
D: OK. Next Thursday at 11:30 at the Atlas. See you then. Bye!
J: Goodbye.
