The Definition and the Classification of Payment
1. The Definition of“Payment”
Payment is an important part of business transactions. The result of all business activities should be the value of the goods or services provided. If payment is not guaranteed, then everything is meaningless. There are many ways of payment in business, and the way of payment in international trade is more complicated. There are also many forms of payment in foreign accounts. The most commonly used method of payment in international trade is the letter of credit (L/C), which is a reliable and safe method of payment. It is convenient for the seller to deal with unfamiliar buyers and it guarantees both buyers and sellers. The opening procedure starts with the buyer. He/She informed his/her correspondent bank of opening a letter of credit in favor of the seller, and the amount of the purchase was the amount of the letter of credit. The buyer’s correspondent bank (the issuing bank) sends the letter of credit to its correspondent bank in the seller’s country, informing the seller of the amount of the letter of credit, the beneficiary, the currency used, the necessary documents and other specific requirements.
