Warm-up
As we all know, payment is the final goal of all business activities. Without the guarantee of the payment, these activities shall lose their meaning.
In international trade, both the seller and the buyer expect the security of the transaction. The exporters would prefer being paid as soon as possible, while the importers would like to collect the goods on time. There are many risks confronted with both parties, such as bankruptcy, political situation, economic policy adjustment, force majeure, etc. Therefore, terms of payment are very important in the contract for they protect both the buyer and the seller in the trade.

Warm-up
In international trade, the modes of payment is much more complex than that in domestic trade. Generally speaking, there are three main modes of payment used in international payment and settlement:
Remittance. The way the importer transfers a certain amount of money to the exporter through banks. This way is generally used between the trustworthy trade partners.
Collection. The way the exporter remits the bank to collect the payment. In this case, the remitting bank would only be liable for the collecting and remitting.
L/C(Letter of Credit). This is the most popular payment method in international trade for it protects both the exporter and the importer. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages to the respective parties.
