New research suggests that people who live close to the ocean or sea are happier. Researchers from the University of Exeter in the U.K. say people who live in sea areas have 1 mental health (心理健康) than people who live inland. This is true not only for rich people 2 for poor people. The researchers looked at data (数据) from surveys of 25,963 people. The surveys asked people questions 3 their happiness, lifestyle and income (收入). They found that those people 4 live within one kilometer of the coast (海岸) were 22 percent less likely to show any signs of mental health problems. People who lived more than 50 kilometers from the coast had 5 mental health problems. The researchers found that poorer people living near the sea were around 40 percent less likely to have mental health 6 than those who lived inland.
The researcher of the study, doctor Jo Garrett, said, “Our research suggests, for the first time, that people in poorer houses living close to the sea have fewer problems of mental health.” She said the places along coasts seemed to protect people 7 experiencing mental health problems. They seemed to 8 people’s health and happiness. Dr Garrett added, “When it comes to mental health, these good places could be useful for people who have high or low incomes.” Another researcher, Dr Mathew White, said, “We need to help policy (政策) makers understand how to make people’s 9 larger by using the ‘blue’ spaces in towns and cities. We need to 10 that these chances are fair for everyone, while not making our environment worse in sea areas.”
