Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web for at least one part of the transaction’s life cycle although it may also use other technologies. E-commerce has made it possible for businesses to directly reach customers anywhere and at anytime in the world. Anyone who hooks up to the Internet is a potential customer. This has not only changed the way products are sold, but also the way all business activities are conducted. Besides, people’s life style has been influenced greatly by e- commerce. They like surfing on the Internet, downloading a latest movie, watching a pop music video, and shopping for their favorite goods. 　　International e-commerce is called cross-border e-commerce, which is defined as any cross- border online purchase made from a business located in another country or jurisdictions. Online trades between consumers and merchants who share the same language, border, and currency are not perceived as cross-border e-commerce. Cross-border e-commerce is widely expected to be a key growth engine for the global e-commerce industry in the coming years, thanks to a convergence of the consumers and market trends. 5 Task 1: Previewing the Unit Topic Look at the picture and discuss the following questions. 1. What can you see in the following picture? What does it mean? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping online or in brick-and-mortar stores? 3. Do you like cross-border online purchases? Why or why not? 6 Task 2: Previewing Professional Terms 　　In this unit, you may meet some particular terms commonly used when people talk about e- commerce and cross-border e-commerce. Now, check the following words and expressions and try to match them with their Chinese equivalents. Make sure that you understand them. Use a dictionary for help if necessary.
