1.1 When to extend an invitation
The invitation to very formal dinners or banquets may be extended 3 to 6 weeks ahead. For informal dinners, the invitation may be sent a few days or three weeks ahead.

1.2 How to extend invitation
You can extend the invitation by telephone. For very formal dinners or banquets, you would extend the invitation by written letters.

1.3 How to respond to invitations
"R.S.V.P." which means "please reply” and is often included on invitations. For "R.S.V.P.", a reply is requested either the guest accepts or refuses the invitation.
Another approach is to write "Regrets only" on an invitation. If the invitation says "Regrets only," only the guest who declines responds. If the invitation says "Regrets only," only the guest who declines responds. If you decline an invitation, make a general excuse, for instance, "I'm terribly sorry. I'm busy that evening." Or explain the reason in more details, for instance, “I hate to miss the evening, but I may have to be in Chicago. Thank you so much for including me in the invitation.”

2 Business banquet etiquette
2.1 Greetings and seatings
As guests enter, the host greets and welcomes them. Pre-dinner drinks are then served. After the cocktail hour, all guests are invited to proceed to the dining room. The guests seat themselves according to the place cards. Honored guests are seated at the host’s right. Men hold the chairs for the women on their right (Many hosts like to alternate men and women, and separate husbands and wives). When all the women are seated, the men sit down.
