Aims and Main Points
Shipment is one of the indispensable terms of a sales contract. The importer and the exporter should reach an agreement on time of shipment, port of shipment and port of destination, shipping advice, partial shipment and transshipment, dispatch and demurrage, etc. and specify them in the
contract.
Upon conclusion of a contract, the party responsible for shipping arrangement as provided under the contract will have to perform his
obligation of making shipping arrangements. In practice, shipment covers rather wide range of work, such as buyers’ sending shipping instructions, appointing shipping agent, clearing the goods through the customs, booking shipping space or chartering a vessel, sellers’ sending shipping advice,
completing shipping documents.
Background Information
The exporter and the importer should reach an agreement on terms of shipment and get them specified in the contract. Proper terms of shipment will greatly facilitate shipping arrangement.

Time of shipment is one of the main clauses of sales contract, which
refers to a period or a deadline for a consignment to be loaded on board a
vessel at the port of shipment.
To make punctual shipment is an important obligation of the exporter
to fulfill the contract. Timely delivery of the goods to the destination can not only meet market demand, reduce the backlog of goods and costs, but also help improve the international competitiveness of domestic products and
promote conclusion of business.
