Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students skim the text to determine the main idea
· Direct students to the text. Ask "What type of reading is this?" Students will most likely be able to recognise it as an article that one might read in a newspaper. Then say " Read the first sentence. What's the article about?" Elicit It's about changes in the world involving forests (trees). If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Point out to students that a person can skim a text by reading the first sentence of each para-graph. This first sentence often includes the main idea of the paragraph. Say " Read the first sentence of each paragraph". Have students read the sentences silently. Then ask "What is the main idea of the text?" Have students read the four choices and select their answer.
· Go over the answer, first having students compare their answers. Then ask a student to say the answer aloud.
