Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students know chores
· Direct students to the photo. Say "Look at the photo. Who are the people?" Elicit It's a mum and her daughter. Ask "What are they doing?" Elicit or provide They're doing the laundry. Say "Doing the laundry is a chore, something you do when you help at home . If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Either write the Key Words on the board (if possible, before class) or have note cards with the Key Words on them, big enough for all the class to see. Then mime, that is, act out, one of the chores, for example, sweep the floor. Point to the Key Word sweep the floor on the board or the note card. Say " Sweep the floor. Repeat. Sweep the floor", as you do the action, having students repeat the phrase after you. Continue in this way with the rest of the Key Words.
· Ask a more proficient student " How often do you clean your room?" as you hold up or point to the Key Word. Elicit an appropriate response. Then say "How often do you do these chores? Tell your partner". Have students get into pairs to discuss how often they do the chores. Monitor, offering assistance as needed. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words. Have students form new pairs for more practice.
· Have a few students tell the class how often they do the chores, or tell about their partners.
· If time allows, do Workbook page 85, Exercise 1. Alternately, assign for homework.
Expansion: Play a Game!
Note: Use these activities to give students more practice.
Activity 1: Act out the chores, but have the students race to be the first to run to the front and touch the Key Word. Then have some students come up, one at a time, to act out the chores, while the other students try to be the first to touch the Key Word.
