· Direct students to Exercise 2. Read the first paragraph aloud. Then say " What is mum doing?" Elicit or provide She is washing the dishes. Write the sentence on the board. Say "When we want to talk about what someone is doing right now, we use the present continuous tense". Ask " What's the present participle in the sentence?" Elicit or provide washing. Underline washing. Ask " What's the verb before washing?" Elicit or provide is. Underline is. Explain that is washing form the present continuous tense with the verb be and a present participle. Ask "Can you find other sentences in the present continuous tense in the reading? Underline them". Give students a few moments to identify the sentences. You may have them work in pairs to do this. Students should underline I'm watering the plants.; Dad's taking out the rubbish.: She isn't doing anything.; I'm putting away my toys now.; You're walking over to our house. We're putting candles on the cake. Ask " When are all these actions taking place?" Elicit or provide They are happening right now.
· Direct students to the Key Words in Exercise 1. Ask "What are the participles for the Key Words?" Elicit a few, for example, cleaning my room, washing the dishes, dusting the furniture, pointing out the spelling rules. Then direct students to the tables. Say "Now complete the tables using the Key Words from Exercise 1". Monitor as students complete the tables, offering assistance as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
