The Netherlands is taking action to ban (禁止) the use of smartphones on bicycles.
The Netherlands is in the northwest of Europe. It is one of the most bike-friendly countries in the world. There are more than 17,000,000 people and more than 22,500,000 bicycles in the Netherlands. That is to say, there are more bikes than people in the country.
But the use of phones on bicycles gives the country a real problem. A study found that 20% of people were using phones when they rode a bike. For people under 25, 20% of car accidents (事故) have something to do with the use of smartphones. A teenage boy got hurt by a car when he was watching his smartphone. As a result, his father, Michael Kulkens, became a supporter (支持者) of banning phone use on bikes. “The driver did nothing wrong, but her life has been different,”said Michael.
This isn’t the first time that the Netherlands has banned the use of phones on the road. People have to pay up to 230 for it if they use a phone when they are riding or driving. “Both bike riders and drivers should pay full attention when they are on the road. It is for the safety of others and themselves,” said Michael.
