Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students talk about a book series
· Direct students to the photo and read the caption aloud. Ask "Do you know who J. K. Rowling is?" If necessary, point to the Harry Potter book she's holding. Elicit or provide She's the author of the Harry Potter books. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Have students get into pairs. Ask "Have you read the Harry Potter books or watched the films? Do you like them? Do you know anything about the writer? Discuss with your partner". Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Come together as a class, having students share their thoughts.
Reading
Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students skim a text and choose a title
· Ask " Who remembers what it means to skim a text?" Elicit an appropriate response, for example, To skim a text means to read quickly to get the main idea. Direct students to the titles. Say "Skim the text and choose the best title"
· Have individual students share their opinions on the best title. Challenge them to say why.

Answers will vary, but most students will probably choose c.
Exercise 3
Purpose: to help students put events in time order
· Direct students to the Reading Help. Read it aloud, or have a student read it. Then say "You've already skimmed the passage for the main idea. Read the text again, paying attention to time indicators. Put the events in the correct order. Finally, write the year that the event happened". Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having students first compare their answers with a partner's. Then ask individual students to read the answers aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences and to show you evidence in the text for their answers.
