At the centre of the School of Athens are Plato and Aristotle. The two men had different pursuits (追求), Plato being engaged with such spiritual ideas as truth, beauty, and justice and Aristotle being concerned with worldly reality. These differences are evident in the painting. Plato, on the left, points skyward while holding a copy of Timaeus (蒂迈欧篇), and Aristotle gestures to the ground and props up a copy of his Ethics (伦理学).
Timaeus 《蒂迈欧篇》为柏拉图的晚期著作,是柏拉图思想的一篇重要文献。

Raphael (1483-1520) was the architect of the high renaissance (文艺复兴), a short period in Italian history when many incredible works of art were produced. He produced many works of art and, along with Michelangelo (米开朗基罗) and Leonardo da Vinci (达芬奇), is considered the third great master of the period.
