Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students use question words correctly and answer information questions
· Ask a student "Who's your PE teacher?" Elicit an appropriate response. Write Who? on the board. Ask " What are the other question words? Elicit How old? What? Where? How many? Which? When? and write them on the board. Ask " Which question word asks about a person or people?" Elicit Who? Write people next to Who? Ask "Which question word asks about places?" Elicit Where? Write places next to Where? Ask " Which question word asks about a time?" Elicit When? Write time next to When? Ask " Which question word asks about age?" Elicit How old? Write age next to How old? Ask " Which question word asks about quantity or amount?" Elicit How many? Write quantity / amount next to How many? Ask "Which question word asks about things?" Elicit What? Write things next to What? Ask "What if you have a choice of things, places or people? Which question word asks about that?" Elicit Which? Write choice next to Which? If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the questions. Say " Complete the questions with the correct question words". Monitor as students complete the questions, offering assistance as needed.
· Go over the answers, having students first compare them with a partner. Then have individual students read the questions aloud.
