Classical Chinese gardens carry a proud history of over 3, 000 years. They are always a collection of traditional Chinese buildings, gardening, literature(文学), painting, and so on. They are not only one of China's traditional cultural treasures, but also an important part of human cultural heritage(遗产).
The classical gardens in Suzhou are the best among the Chinese gardens. In 1997, four gardens in Suzhou were listed as world cultural heritage by UNESCO. In 2000, another five were added to the list.
The history of Suzhou gardens goes back to the Spring and Autumn Period. In the later dynasties, gardening developed as an art form and private gardens got more and more popular. The Ming and Qing dynasties saw the golden age of garden building. At its peak(顶峰), there were more than 280 private gardens and courtyards in Suzhou. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, there were more than 170 gardens in the ancient city. Over 50 of them have been well-kept till today. That's why Suzhou is known as "Garden City" and “Paradise on Earth”.
The classical gardens in Suzhou are known for "creating another world in a limited space". In those gardens, you can find mountains and rivers, flowers and trees, garden buildings, as well as a large number of calligraphy(书法)and painting works. All of them form a poetic land together. For this reason, the classical gardens are called "silent poetry, 3D painting".
