Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students use possessive pronouns correctly
· Write Can I borrow your book? on the board. Ask " Which word shows possession?" Elicit and underline your. Remind students that your is a possessive adjective and that it modifies, or gives information about, book. It tells whose book it is. Ask a student "Can I borrow your book?" After you have the book, ask "Whose book is it?" Elicit an appropriate response, for example, It's his / her book. Write this on the board. Erase his / her book and replace it with his / hers. Explain that his and hers are possessive pronouns. Possessive pronouns show ownership and replace noun phrases, in this case his / her book. Then write It's Ben's ball. on the board. Ask "Which word shows possession?" Elicit Ben's. Erase Ben's and ask "What's the possessive adjective?" Elicit his. Then erase his ball and ask "What's the possessive pro-noun?" Elicit or provide his.
· Say "Now complete the table with the correct possessive pronouns". Monitor as your students complete the table. Offer as much assistance as needed. Remember that your students have heard some of the possessive pronouns in the listening, but may not have seen them before. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having individual students come to the board and complete a similar table and read each possessive pronoun aloud.
