Exercise 4
Purpose: to help students identify and write the correct time
· Revise times with the clock you used earlier or with one drawn on the board. Set the clock to a quarter past the hour, a quarter to the hour, on the hour, on the half hour, and a few minutes past and to the hour. Each time, ask "What time is it?" If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the clocks. Say "Look at the clocks and complete the times". Monitor as students complete the phrases, offering help as needed. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the sentences aloud. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words.
Answers
1. past; 2. past; 3. to: 4. to
· If time allows, do Workbook page 83, Exercise 2. Alternately, assign for homework.
Expansion: Don't Stop!
Note: Use this activity to give students more practice. Bring in clocks, one for each pair of students. Alternately, have your students make their own clocks, either in class or at home, from paper plates, cut out minute and hour hands, and paper clips to attach the hands to the plate. Assist them as needed with writing the numbers in the correct places, encouraging them to be creative with designs and colours. Then have them get in to pairs, taking turns setting times and asking "What time is it?" Monitor, making sure students are saying the correct times and offering assistance as needed. Encourage them to use the Key Words when saying the times. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words.
Grammar: Prepositions of time ( in, on, at)
Exercise 5
