Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students identify and match opposite adjectives
· Direct students to Exercise 1, picture a. Ask a student to read the Example. Write small and big on the board. Explain that these two words have opposite meanings.
· Direct students to the words. Say, " Now match the opposites". Monitor as students complete the activity, offering help as needed.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students or the entire class to say the opposite pairs.

Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students differentiate between opposite adjectives
· Direct students to the pictures in Exercise 1. point to a2. Say "He's pretty". Students should look confused or maybe even laugh. Play along with them. Ask "He's not pretty?" Elicit NO! Ask "Do we say that a boy is pretty?" Elicit no. Ask " What adjective do we use to describe a boy: pretty or handsome?" Elicit handsome. Ask " When do we use pretty?" Elicit To describe a girl.
· Direct students to the sentences. Say "Circle the correct word in each sentence" Monitor as students circle the words, offering assistance as needed.
· Go over the answers, having individual students say the sentences aloud.

Expansion: Don't Stop!
Activity 1: Ask students to find the opposites of the other adjectives pretty (ugly) and thin (fat) from the Key Words in Exercise 1.
Activity 2: Teach students how to produce negative sentences with adjectives, showing them placement of not in the sentence and contractions. Let them practise with the pictures in Exercise 1. Students should produce She's not / She isn't big. She's small.; He's not / He isn't small. He's big. etc.
