Letters and Sounds
Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students identify the consonants l, r, h, j, qu, x and y
· Direct students to the boxed letters. Ask "Which letters are these, vowels or consonants?" Elicit or provide consonants.
· Direct students to the words in the exercise, pointing out the red letters. Play the recordoing. The first time having students just listen .
· Write 1, r, h, j, gu, x and y on the board. Have students practise saying the consonant sounds. Say the first consonant sound several times and a word with the /1/ sound, for example, like. Say " Repeat after me, /1/, /l/, /l/, like". Say the rest of the sounds, pointing to each letter as you say the sound and word. Some examples of words are /r/ read, /h/ have, / dʒ/ jam, /kw/ quiet, /k s/ sixty, /j/ yesterday.
· Play the recording again. Say "Now listen a-gain and say the words. Pay attention to the red letters". Check students' pronunciation of the consonants.
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students identify the correct initial and ending consonants
· Direct students to the letters. Ask " What are the sounds of these consonants?" Elicit 1, /1/; r, /r/; h, /h/; j, / dʒ/; qu, /kw/; y, /j/; x, /ks/; r, /r/; ll /1/; and y /j/. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Say "Look and match the left part and the right part to complete each word". Do item 1 together. Ask "What's the word?" Elicit long. Monitor as students do the activity, offering help when needed. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs.
