An African American Festival—Kwanzaa
Around the worldꎬ millions of people
celebrate Kwanzaa. It is an African holiday
celebrated by many African Americans.
This festival was created by Maulana in
1966. His purpose was to bring together the
African ̄American communityꎬ which is also the
most important meaning of this festival. The name
“Kwanzaa” means “ first fruits” .
People celebrate it with a seven ̄day
holiday. Alsoꎬ there are seven rules of Kwanzaa.
The first three are unity(团结)ꎬ controlling your
own life and working together. The last four are
supporting each otherꎬ purposeꎬ creativity and
belief.
Kwanzaa also has some symbolsꎬ such as
cropsꎬ candles and cups. During this festivalꎬ
these objects(物体) are put on a table. Three of
the candles are redꎬ which are symbols of the
hard work of black people. Three are greenꎬ
representing the land and hope for the future.
One is blackꎬ which stands for people whose
families came from Africa.
People give gifts to friends and family
members on the last day of Kwanzaa. The gifts
are often educational. Some people buy booksꎬ
music or art objectsꎬ often from businesses owned
