Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students use proper greetings, express thanks and use appropriate responses
· Bring in some photos from magazines of people talking, preferably ones that show people meeting, for example, on the street, in the park or at school. Show your students the photos and ask them what the situation is. If students have trouble answering the question, write three options for them to choose from on the board, for example, 1) They are cooking dinner. 2) They are saying hello to each other. 3) They are shopping. Elicit They are saying hello or They are greeting each other. Ask more proficient students“What do you think they are saying to each other?”Elicit Hello. How are you? If your students cannot answer, provide the answer for them. Write the Key Expressions on the board. Point to the Key Expressions and ask“What's the answer?”Elicit I'm fine. Thanks. How about you? Again, provide the answer if necessary. Write it on the board. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the Key Expressions and say“Read the Key Expressions aloud”. Read the Key Expressions with the class. Alternately, have students do a choral drill, repeating after you. Then say“Now complete the dialogues with the Key Expressions”. Monitor closely as students complete the dialogue. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Say“Now listen to dialogues and check your answers”. Play the dialogues the first time so students can check their answers. If your students have trouble, pause the recording between the two dialogues. After students have listened to the dialogues, go over the answers as a class.
