Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help consider the kind of pollution in their neighbourhood as well as the causes of it
· Direct students to the pictures. Ask“What can you see in these pictures?”Possible responses:
Picture 1: The air looks dirty. I can see smoke.
Picture 2: They are fixing the road. The man is using a machine.
Picture 3: The water looks dirty.
Picture 4: I can see a lot of rubbish.
You may skip this step if you feel students are ready to do the exercise.
· Direct students to the words ( noting four types of pollution). Ask“ What kind of pollution can you see in the pictures?” (Picture 1: air pollution; Picture 2: noise pollution; Picture 3: water pollution; Picture 4: land pollution)
· Then ask“What kind of pollution is there in your neighbourhood?” Write the four types on the board. Have students work in pairs and
1A discuss who or what is causing each pollution in their neighbourhood. Direct them to the Example. Have a student read it aloud.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to give examples aloud. Write their suggestions on the board under each pollution type.
Answers
Answers will vary but may include the following:
• air pollution; from factories, vehicles (cars, buses, trucks) , people smoking cigarettes
• water pollution: from factories, vehicles (boats, ships, ferries) , rubbish from people
• land pollution: rubbish from people, businesses
• noise pollution; from vehicles, construction, factories, speakers from shops
Expansion: Think about It!
Give each student a piece of paper. Have them fold it in half and choose one type of pollution (air, noise ...). Write Stop (Air) Pollution as the heading across the top of the page. Then draw pictures (or write words) that represent a polluted scene on the left side of the page. (Example: Factories
