The Alphabet
Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students practise the alphabet
· Direct students to the alphabet. Say“Point to the capital letter A”. Students should point to the letter A. Then say“Point to the small letter a”. Students should point to the letter a. Say“Read the letters aloud”. Read aloud with the class. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Say“Now let's listen and chant along.”Play the recording, having students chant along.
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students show knowledge of the alphabet
· Hold up the Student Book and cover one of the letters, for example Hh. Ask“Which letter is missing?”Elicit Hh. Alternately, if you have the alphabet posted in your classroom, remove one of the letters and ask the question.
· Direct students to the blocks. Say“Listen to the alphabet again. Write down the missing capital letters”. Play the recording again. Monitor as students write the missing letters, making sure they understand the exercise. For more proficient students, challenge them to complete the alphabet without listening.
· Go over the answers, asking various students to take turns saying the entire alphabet.

Exercise 7
Purpose: to help students show knowledge of the letters of the alphabet 13
· Show a computer keyboard. If possible, make a keyboard ahead of time out of paper and poster board, large enough so that it's visible to the class. Touch one of the letters and say it aloud, for example P. Ask “Which letter is it?”Elicit P. Ask a volunteer to come to the front. Say“Touch the letters you hear”Then say a letter, for example K.
