Purpose: to help students listen to and recite a poem
· Ask“What should we remember to do when we recite a poem?”Have students brainstorm ideas in groups. Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Then have them share their ideas. Write main points on the board. Elicit such ideas as:
⭕Clearly state the title of the poem and name of the poet;
⭕Speak loudly and clearly;
⭕Include pauses between main points and verses;
⭕Speak at the right speed (not too slow or too fast);
⭕Use expression in voice;
⭕Try to speak to listener ( communicate your ideas ) ...
· Have students look at the poem. Say“Listen to the recording as you read the poem”. Play the recording of the poem. Then have students discuss the ideas they stated earlier about reciting a poem. Ask“What did the person reciting the poem remember to do?”Go through the points together.
· Ask students to try reciting the poem together. Play the title and name of poet and have students listen and repeat. Then play the poem two lines at a time and have students listen and repeat.
· After reciting the poem together, have them work in pairs and take turns reciting the poem (verse by verse) to each other. Monitor, offering help as needed. Encourage students to follow the ideas noted earlier about reciting poems.
· Have eight volunteers come to the front of the class. Have them read the poem (1 or 2 lines per volunteer) for the class. Prompt them to hold their books in front of them at the proper height (so that they can keep their heads up) and to stand straight. Note: Encourage the rest of the students to be good listeners. Encourage them to:
⭕keep their eyes on those giving the presentation;
⭕look interested;
⭕applaud at the end ...
