Unit 5 Lesson 13 Anne of Green Gables(第二课时)
Lesson Focus
• Relative pronouns and relative clauses
• Make and reply to requests
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students identify the noun a relative pronoun refers to
· Direct students to the first example sentence in Exercise 5. Ask“ What's the relative pronoun in the sentence?”Elicit who. Say“Remember that a pronoun, like I, you, it, him, hers, its, always refers to a person or a thing. Who does the relative pronoun who in the example sentence refer to?”Give students a little time to look at the sentence. Write it on the board. Underline the relative clause and circle who. If necessary, ask“Does who refer to a person or thing?”Elicit A person. Then ask“Who is the person in the first clause?”Elicit or provide a quiet man and underline it. Ask or point out that a quiet man refers to He, and He refers to Matthew. Rewrite the two clause like this: Matthew was a quiet man. Matthew didn't speak much. Explain that each relative pronoun in the relative clause refers to someone or something in the first clause in the sentence. Point out that the noun the relative pronoun refers to often appears just before the pronoun.
· Direct students to the sentences in the chart in Exercise 5. Go over the sentences as a class, eliciting who or what each relative pronoun refers to: who/that = a sister, who/that = the boy, which/that = a flat, which/that = the meeting. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip these steps.
· Direct students to the reading. Say“Now read the sentences you underlined in the text. What do who, that and which refer to?”Monitor, offering help as needed. You may wish to have students do this and discuss in pairs.
· Go over the answers, asking individual students to say them aloud. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences. Challenge them to tell you which relative pronouns are objects and which are subjects. Then have them try to“break apart”the sentences into two, without a relative pronoun. See be
