Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students express their opinions on inventions
· Ask“Which invention do you like best?”Elicit a few answers, asking students to try to say why. Then ask“Why do you think these kids can make these inventions? Discuss these questions with a partner”. Monitor, offering help as needed.
· Come together as a class, having students share their thoughts.
Expansion: What Do You Think?
Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Tell students some quotations about inventing things. Have them respond, giving their opinions on the quotations and expressing how they think it pertains to the inventions in the reading. Here are a few:

Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students talk about creativity
· Have students brainstorm qualities of inventors. You can do this as a class or have them do it in small groups. Either way, get some of the answers on the board. Then ask“Think about the inventers from the passage. What are some examples of their creativity?”Elicit appropriate responses. If necessary, read the Example aloud, or have two students read it. Have students get into pairs to discuss. Moni-tor, offering help as needed.
· Come together as a class, having students share their opinions.
Expansion: Write about It!
Note: Use this activity to give students more practice. Have students do some research on an invention that interests them. Then have them prepare to tell the class about it. You can do this as a class, making time for each student, or in small
