Function
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students know preferences
· Direct students to the chart in Exercise 2. Ask“What does Adam like?” Elicit Adam likes making models. If necessary, ask other questions based on the chart. Write one or more examples on the board. Ask“ What form follows the verbs like, hate, don't mind and don't like?” Elicit or provide the -ing form of a verb. Explain that verbs that express preferences are followed by the -ing form of the verb. If necessary, give other examples from the chart. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the Key Expressions. Read them aloud, or have a student read them. Say“Circle the -ing form of the verb that follows the verb that shows a preference”. Monitor, offering help as needed. Ask students to read the Watch out! section to themselves. Review the placement of the modifiers: really comes before the verb, and a lot and very much come at the end of the sentence.
Expansion: Mix It Up!
Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Ask students to ask and answer questions about their own preferences, using the Key Expressions. If necessary, review how to form the questions and answers. For example Do you like drawing? Yes, I do. / No, I don't. / I hate drawing. / I love drawing. Note that we don't ask Do you love drawing? We ask more generally, using like.
