Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students talk about sports on television
· Ask a more proficient student“Do you watch sports on TV?”Elicit an appropriate response. Tell students whether or not you do, and if so, tell them a little about the sports you watch. Have students brainstorm sports and write some on the board. Point to one of the sports, for example, football, and ask“On which sport show can you watch football games?”Elicit some answers. Continue with the other sports. You may skip this step if you feel students are ready to do the exercise.
· Have students get into pairs. Say“Talk about the sports you like to watch”. Monitor, offering help as needed. To expand the activity, have students form new pairs.
· Come together as a class. Ask some students to volunteer. Say“Describe one of your favourite sports shows to the class”. Encourage students to answer in complete sentences.
Expansion: Practise Self-correction!
Encourage students to self-correct by repeating what they've said incorrectly but intoning it as a question. For example, if a student says My favourite sports show are Tennis World, repeat the sentence, or part of it, as a question, stressing the incorrect part:“...ARE Tennis World?" This will give students the cue that they need to rephrase something or use other language or pronunciation.
